GIS Internship with the MassDEP

Martha Garley

Abstract:
In the Spring 2022 semester, I worked as the geographic information system (GIS) intern for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP). The tasks of my internship focus on organizing data and documenting brownfields, the previously developed land that is not currently in use that may be potentially contaminated. I use GIS to collect datasets and create maps, which allows visualization and easy access to information. I also work on comparing coordinates and details from brownfields reports to match with the corresponding property parcel maps. My work contributes to the MassDEP BWSC Brownfields Certification program, which identifies and promotes the redevelopment of former disposal sites.
