Virtual Reality and How It Blurs The Line With Actual Reality

Abstract

Virtual Reality is still a very new technology that has only been commercially viable for a very short amount of time. Since 2016, many other products have come to the market giving more consumers the opportunity to experience Virtual Reality. With this growth of VR products and consumers, it has become easier to do research on the products and what effects they may have. Virtual Reality also blurs the line between it and actual reality by giving users the sensation that they are in a completely different place than their actual physical surroundings. This research project aims to show individuals how it blurs the lines of actual reality and Virtual Reality. I will have them go through guided narrative Virtual Reality experiences that I will create, which teach and highlight how they would likely react. By using other’s research on this topic, I will also construct a 20-page artist statement further explaining in more detail how Virtual Reality tricks your mind into believing it is real. This artist statement will be supported by other’s research on the topic, and it will be closely linked with the guided narrative experience. For this research conference, I am presenting more of an in-progress report as I have only worked on this for a short amount of time.
