Korean Book Display - February 2023

FIS aims to have books that represent our student community. This month, a team of parents helped to identify Korean texts for our Upper School library. Thank you to the parents who contributed to the design and development of this display!

If you would like to explore the development of a display to highlight texts from your country or on another theme related to EJB, please contact your divisional librarian.

Students Taking Action - February 2023

Following the devastating earthquake in Türkiye and Syria earlier this month, our Upper School students sprang into action to come up with ideas on how to help. One of the activities included a collective bake sale involving Upper School service groups and other Grade 10 students to help raise funds for disaster relief. This week the efforts will continue with another bake sale, as well as a series of morning musical performances from FIS community "buskers," all of whom will be accepting donations to support the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz and their efforts in Türkiye and Syria. Thank you to the student leaders of Refugees Aware, Girl Up and Andante along with other collaborating service groups and students for this effort.

Visiting poet Naomi Shihab Nye - February 2023

We welcomed poet Naomi Shihab Nye to our campus as a poet-in-residence. Naomi worked with students across the school, including our IB diploma students who are studying her poetry as part of the IB syllabus. Following her week here on campus she sent a note to our Upper School Librarian, Manatsu McCluskey, which read: "I am thinking of all your beautiful poets and teachers, all the time! May they thrive! Truly one of the best campuses ever felt. Miss you all!"

Building Belonging in Grades 6-8

Students and teachers in Grades 6-8 are working with Sea Change Mentoring  to build relationships and strengthen the middle school learning community through the advisory program.

"Deep learning requires young people to feel safe and seen in their relationships with their teachers."
