Any K-12 student in Forest Hills Public Schools is welcome to join in the fun of Odyssey of the Mind! If a child shows interest in science, acting, engineering, visual arts, construction, costume design, sewing, mechanics, architecture, literature, creating music, singing, making a mess, laughing with friends, being curious, going down "a rabbit hole", gamifying life, or just being silly, Odyssey of the Mind is a perfect activity to explore those interests in an internationally competitive academic sport. It's also an excellent place for children to try a wide variety of artistic, STEM, performance, research, problem-solving, and engaging activities to discover what their interests really are. And the coolest thing about Odyssey of the Mind? While adults can coach the kids to develop skills they need to achieve their team's goals, all -- A L L -- decisions are made by the kids! "Outside influence" from adults and other people is strictly off-limits, so few activities build student autonomy and self-confidence the way Odyssey of the Mind does.
What does this cost? VERY little. There is no "pay to play" fee for joining Odyssey of the Mind, and teams are rewarded for using trash items and creatively upcycling materials to solve problems. Unless a team qualifies for the World Tournament, costs are limited to materials, paint, handmade costumes, etc.
How are adults involved? Without adult participation as coaches, judges, and other necessary roles, there is no Odyssey of the Mind. Although help with the solution skit is not permitted, adults organize meetings, support the team's needs, teach practical and creative skills (sewing, welding, acting, etc.), create a culture of teamwork and collaboration, and celebrate the kids. It's both challenging and fun to be an adult volunteer.
