Carson Middle School- All School Read 2022-2023

All School Read - End Reflection (4/28 Purple Day)

Update 2022-2023 CMS All School Read

One of the observations notices by teachers through data analysis, classroom culture, and student feedback was the fact that students essentially had lost, or do not, find time to sit and read. This simple task of reading, reflecting, and discussing a book has become antiquated in today's fast paced digital society. So... every individual in our building made a commitment to read "The Total Eclipse of Nestor Lopez" a story of a young (military child) moves to a new home town he finds he has a secret ability to communicate with animals- ultimately saving his home town, and Nestor finding stability in his own life. This process took place in ACCESS period during second semester and without fail had a tremendous impact on Reading skills and interest- evident by Illuminate ELA Growth data that showed growth in every ELA classroom this year!

School Safety- Giving Students/Staff Ownership of School Safety

School Safety is a priority at Carson Middle School. All staff and students regularly review drills, protocols, and expectations of our Standard Response Protocols (listed avbove). Each year a parent committe is also selected to work with administration to discuss communication, systems, and overall safety of students in the school. In addition, our students have a voice.... This Point of Confusion document (below) was created in an AVID classroom demonstrating the "buy" in from students on their own safety questions. Each year all students work on this document in their ACCESS class to have discussions on how best to keep each other safe in the case of a challenging event occuring at CMS.

Eagles in Action/Student Voice

New Update 2023-24-

Eagles in Action will be an extension of the work we started in 2021 through our ACCESS period, Success Conversation and Essential Skills school wide focus. Students in this program will build and DEMONSTRATE leadership, essential, and PWR skill sets in a variety of settings in and out of the classroom. Students will set a goal, build collaboration with staff/mentors to complete the goal, and then use their skill sets/knowledge to present their work in a capstone/portfoliio presentation at the end of the school year. This presentation event will coincide with parent learning walks and our end of the year celebrations.
