High Performance Computing in Astrophysics and Atomic Physics Summer School

News and Information

The room were all the school sessions will be held is located in the physics department (Ed. 1) of the NOVA SST. The room number is 213 (Sala de Seminários).

Scientific Scope

This Summer School is organized by the LIBPhys-UNL research group of the Department of Physics of the NOVA School of Science and Technology in Lisbon. This event consists of a three day school on high performance computing in the fields of astrophysics and atomic physics, targeted at undergraduate and graduate students.

The school is aimed at helping the attendants developing skills in advanced computing (high-performance computing, quantum computing, high-performance data analytics, artificial intelligence, data visualization, etc) in specific problems of atomic physics, and astrophysics.

World-class experts will give lectures on their fields, and will introduce the problems of manipulating, measuring and simulating physical properties of simple and complex atomic systems with interest in astrophysics. Practical sessions on data analysis, Bayesian statistics, high performance computing for plasma simulations and quantum computing will complement the theoretical lectures.

This scientific event will provide an interdisciplinary forum for students and young scientists working in the field of Atomic Physics and Astrophysics to discuss and exchange problems and ideas on the challenges and progress of the field with group leaders from several renowned institutions.

Attendants are expected to bring their own PC for the practical tutorials.

Recognized experts will give lectures and Hands-on trainings in the following topics:

School Topics

  • High-accuracy x-ray spectrometry of complex quantum systems

  • Precision measurements and quantum electrodynamics with highly-charged-ions

  • Ion manipulation for quantum computing

  • High-performance computing in astrophysical plasma modeling

  • Quantum computing
