Teng Chieh

by Abinaya S

Published October 31, 2018

Teng Chieh, or the Lantern Festival, marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Lanterns in a plethora of shapes and sizes are hung up around homes, temples, and streets. According to multiple sources detailing the customs and traditions of this holiday, some lantern owners even create riddles, which are then stuck to the lantern. Prizes are awarded for correct answers.

Rice dumplings filled with sugar, rose petals, dried fruit, or other things are a common staple of food on this day. It usually takes place in February, around the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. It is celebrated in China, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Tibet, as well as a few other countries. On the day of the festival, people walk the streets to indulge in the wondrous displays of colorful, vivid, sometimes even moving lanterns.

Special effects are occasionally used for the lanterns, such as laser beams to represent the fire breath of dragons. On the final day of the Lantern Festival, which is sometimes referred to as the Shangyuan Festival, a massive dragon is crafted using bamboo rods and satin cloth, and is carried through the streets by the men and boys. Firecrackers are set off in bright, vivid displays for the people to see as they celebrate the Lantern Festival together. According to some legends, Teng Chieh donned the name “The Lantern Festival” after an ancient ceremony that celebrated the beginning of Spring.

Lanterns symbolized the long hours of daylight and sunlight, and branches of the willow trees were considered the symbol of spring rains. Others state that the lanterns served the purpose of fending off evil spirits, believed to freely roam the earth during this time. Some hang lanterns through the streets to guide the spirits of those who have passed to reincarnation.

The Lantern Festival is a celebration of utmost significance to these people, because it offers them a chance to celebrate the lives of their loved ones, and guide them to the next chapter of the Afterlife.

Smash Bros Ultimate Theories & Leaks Follow-Up

by Alejandro R.

Published October 30, 2018

Last time on Smash Ultimate Theories and Leak, we covered one of the leaks that seemed very believable. It said that Ken from Street Fighter, Isaac from Golden Sun, Chorus Kids from Rhythm Heaven, Isabelle from Animal Crossing, Shadow the Hedgehog, Skull Kid from The Legend of Zelda, and Agnes Oblige from Bravely Default. Well Isabelle is a very important character from that leak, because on August 13, 2018. Isabelle got announced for Smash Bros Ultimate. Now those this mean the whole leak is real, not really.

The leaker said these screenshots were from direct trailers. The face Isabelle is making is never shown on the trailer, ever. Does this mean the leak is fake,? Most probably. But, we have other leaks coming in hot. This leak is the placeholder image for the Super Smash Bros Special Edition for the Pro Controller. It shows two blank squares, one of them could be Isabelle, and who else?

There hasn’t been any other characters. If you are wondering where Mario is he is most probably on the other side of the box. If you go to the website, you will see rows of character in the roster. The characters go six characters make a row. This means that one of the row is missing one character. Could this possibly mean only 1 more character for Smash Bros? Maybe not. This image is probably just a placeholder and isn’t finished yet.

If this image is just a work in progress this mean three things. 1: The rows will be bigger, maybe consisting of seven instead of six people. 2: There will be seven new characters, this isn’t that out there. 3: There will only be one new character.

Some characters that are being theorized are Ken from Street Fighter as an Echo Fighter, Shadow The Hedgehog as Sonic’s Echo Fighter, Banjo Kazooie, Dixie Kong as Diddy Kong’s Echo Fighter, a Pokemon from Gen 7 or an Alolan Trainer, and Sora from Kingdom Hearts. That is 6 characters will probably make it, this means that it isn’t out of left field for them to add these characters.

The Origin of Halloween

by Kyle Krug

Published October 29, 2018

As we all should know, Halloween is celebrated annually on October 31rst. Every year children and disturbed adults go trick or treating whilst older teens and undisturbed adults take kids trick or treating or greet them with candy, Branding October as the month of spookiness. But people don’t really know how it all started, and how it all went down. Well, in celebration of spookiness, let's talk about the origin of Halloween.

The origin traces back an old Celtic festival called Samhain. They celebrated the new year on November the first, which is a day after today’s Halloween. The day marked the end of summer and the beginning of the harvest. It also marked the beginning of winter, a time that symbolizes death. So the day before, they celebrated Samhain, which is the day the ghosts were believed to rise from the dead.

During this day the Celts would damage crops and cause all sorts of trouble but in addition to that they thought that Druids (Celtic priests) could tell the future during this day. This ,of course, was false but hey let them dream. Them once the celebration re-lit there hearths and sacred bonfires to keep warm during the long, cold winter.

By 43 A.D the Romans had pretty much taken over the Celts and their land and for all 400 odd years so what the Romans did was just kinda combine 2 of their festivals with Samhain with the first being Feralia which was a day when the Romans celebrated the dead. But the only thing of note come from this is the birth of bobbing for apples. The next being All Saints Day which is celebrated pretty much the same as Samhain but instead of being celebrated on may 14th it was switched to november 1rst. Eventually the day before became All Hallows Eve what we know as Halloween and spread minimally.

Now it's what you have all been waiting for, Halloween coming to America. In Great Britain it wasn’t celebrated all too much but it started to gain traction in the colonies, specifically the southern ones. But we all know we do things differently here in America, so we developed our own distinct version of Halloween. The colonial festivals had things called “play parties” where people celebrate the harvest, tell stories of the dead etc. But it wasn’t popular everywhere in America. But it was in Ireland. So when the the Irish potato famine hit, America was flooded with Irish immigrants who brought Halloween to the rest of the country. With the spreading of the holiday itself, they meshed together some traditions, one of them being a tradition where you go house to house asking for food or money in exchange for caroling. This tradition eventually morphed into what we know as Trick Or Treating.

Now you know what the abridged version of the history of Halloween. How will this help you in life? It won’t! So just like sitting alone in your house doing nothing during Halloween, this was a waste of time! But at least it was a fun waste of time wasn’t it?

The Best Candy Trading System

by Alejandro R.

October 16, 2018

After you went Trick-or-Treating for the night, you see that your friend has your favorite candy. This is where the real fun begins. After you finish trick-or-treating, you have to trade candies. Well, I have the laws, the system and everything else that has to do with trading candy.

Step 1: Choose Your Trading Partner. Children under the age of five are legally protected, that is because of Becky’s Law. Named after a little girl named Becky, who traded her entire stash to her brother for a box of Good & Plenty, which her brother convinced her were unicorn eggs, she cried for three and a half years. Children ages 5-7 have a 30-second trade back and this also applies to elderly people. If you have friends or siblings with chocolate allergies, nut allergies, lactose intolerance, or an affinity for licorice (black), these people make ideal trading partners.

Step 2: Organization And Presentation. Loose candy corn should be placed alongside your pennies, they’re equally as useless. Under the new health law, ripped or unwrapped candy falls under the Pre-existing Condition, and although they lose value, they should not be excluded from trading. Dum-dums should be organized by complete sets and not individual flavors, unless you have two or more root beers. Those should be set aside. Put your 3 Musketeers together with your Milky Ways to fair it out for people who don’t know the difference, they’ll probably also confuse Krackel and Mr. Goodbars too. Hide your Mary Janes, banana flavored Laffy Taffys, and any short lasting bubble gum under a pile of whoppers, goobers, caramels, and red-hots. Be prepared to offer the whole stack as an all out, no tradeback for a Charleston Chew or greater.

Although Nerds are inert Pop Rocks, they should be placed in their own category. Unfortunately, Butterfingers, Mounds, and Almond Joys should be set aside for the Mom & Dad Tax, note that their is growing support to repeal the Mom & Dad Tax as it hurts honest candy exposure and might lead children to stop trick-or-treating all together. If possible avoid major transactions until after the elections. And raisins should be burned and then peed on by your dog.

Step 3: Trading Strategies. Avoid anyone who suggests dumping all the candy in a pile and rashing it out based on hunger, that person is a Marxist. Whatever you choose remember that pixie sticks, twizzlers, and smarties are your work horses. And 5th Avenues are better than 100 Grand. Hope you put this guide to good use this Halloween.

Different Types of Houses on Halloween

by Lynden S.

Published October 16, 2018

1. The Cool House

This is the house that understands how much candy kids want and that has least decorations but the most candy. Each time I go to every single one these houses they are filled to the brim with all the candy. They are not afraid to fill your bag up. They usually say, "I'm just going to give you all this candy, so I won't be tempted to eat it."

2. The King Size House

This house is usually known for having the biggest candy in the neighborhood. These are also known as high risk & high rewards. These are really good places to stop at if you want big candy. They also have scariest decorations like a evil witch or a pop up werewolf. Everybody that goes trick or treating knows these houses like the back of your hand.

3. The Big Decoration House

These houses are like a trap-they have a lot of decoration, but they don’t have a bunch of candy. They are not bad they just don’t know how much candy kids want. Plus, they like to talk to you and ask you questions such as, "what are you dressed up as?" They usually just give you one or two pieced of the small type of candy. But they do have a lot of things to scare you with.

4. The “Only Take One” House

This is the house where the owners are not at home, but they put a big bowl on the front porch that says, "Only Take One." These houses never learn. They do the same thing every year and the same thing happens. Somebody takes the whole bowl. To be honest, I don’t blame them because it's just a big bowl of candy and you're expecting a kid to only take one. This house will always be a first come first serve house, so make sure you go to this one first.

Why I’m Late To My 8th Period

by Alejandro R

Published October 16, 2018

I’ve never been on time to my 8th period class. A lot of people know about this and think, “Oh that’s because one-way halls exist.” Well, yes and no, there are so many other reasons why someone has missed the boat to their course of study. First, let's say you are on one side of the school and your locker is on the other side. Ex: end of 900 hall to the other end of 900 hall. First, you don’t waste time by walking, no no no. You waste time packing up and then you start walking.

You get to your locker but you see some taller kids chatting away and luckily for you, you have the bottom locker, so you have to wait till they leave. You can finally get to your locker this is the easiest part, you input the combination and… nothing happens. Right now you're thinking maybe I put the combination wrong you do it again once or twice and then you notice. It’s jammed, well this is easy, I’ll just kick.

A teacher notices you kicking it and then gets mad and says, “Why didn’t you just ask me to unjam it for you?” They open your locker and there you go. All your stuff is outside your backpack, and you have to put your stuff in your backpack now. There, all your stuff is packed and you're ready to go. You walk towards the other part of the school where your class is and the same teacher goes up to you. “Excuse me, but this is a one-way hall.” That dreadful sentence no one wishes to hear.

Now you have to walk to the end of the mini hall, and then walk to the end of the hall where it is a two-way hall. As soon as you get to the two way hall, you see the cafeteria. You go past the cafeteria and you get to the the 6th grade hall. You finally made it, but you made it three minutes late.

Can laughter really help you live longer?

By Abinaya S.

Published September 25, 2018

One question that has been brought up by many conversations is if laughing truly has the ability to extend your life. It can, in fact, cause you to live longer. Anger, sadness, frustration, and other negative emotions such as these can increase your levels of stress, which often leads to other, more serious physical conditions.

Laughing and forgetting about the stress for a moment can scientifically help you live longer by lowering your stress levels, and thus lower the risk of a dangerous condition. Many studies have been performed to determine the answer to this question, and all have relatively similar results.

So, remember to live, love, and most importantly, LAUGH.

HEROES

By: Morgan Z.

Published September 25, 2018

They are all around us. They may look like any other person. The elderly, teachers, parents, siblings, friends. They all do something to us. They influence our lives. The elders, they tell us their life stories, and give us wisdom of the ages.

Parents, they teach us to love. Teachers, they teach us about past mistakes in the world then how to right the wrongs. Siblings, they save us from mistakes they made. Friends, by giving us a shoulder to cry on and the support we need to survive a day.

Everybody in this world has a purpose. While it may be to teach, to cook, to paint, to love, to dance, to drive, to write, to facilitate they have a purpose. They matter. The people in this world, they save you in any way they can. It may be in a small way. A smile from a stranger, a wave from a friend. Anything someone does to make you happy makes them a hero. Because they saved your day. Sometimes they just save your day. Sometimes they save your week. Sometimes the month.

A simple hello can make someone happy, ecstatic even. Everybody in this world is a hero. If they aren’t a hero to you, they may be to someone else. They may seem like the weirdest person you’ve ever seen. But to someone else, they may be the sun to someone’s rainy day. They are the true heroes in this world, and while they may not wear capes, spandex and be famous, they deserve recognition.

The Wilhelm Gustloff

By Abinaya S.

Published September 25, 2018

The infamous incidents of both the Titanic and the Lusitania left a mark on history that can never be repaired. But with their death tolls of 1,500 and 1,200, these horrible maritime incidents are nothing compared to the tragedy of the Wilhelm Gustloff, a ship carrying about 10,000 passengers from Germany during WW2. Somewhere in the Baltic Sea, Soviet sub S-13 struck it down, leaving the passengers of a ship that was only meant for 1,500 people to fend for themselves in the icy waters.

With far too few lifeboats, an estimated 9,343 people didn’t survive. Most were war refugees, fleeing the horrors in Germany, and half were just young children. But even though the death toll of this tragedy is six times larger than that of the Titanic, school curriculums and educators neglect to teach us about it.

As sad as it may be, it’s a part of history, and it’s something we need to know. As George Santayana wisely stated, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

Technological 3D painting

By Lynden S.

Published September 25, 2018

3D painting is the future. We can make blueprints, paintings, and virtual designs. It’s all at our fingertips with the Dell Latitude. We have an app built in called paint 3D which lets us spray paint, paint, draw, and write.

This is huge because it lets us make our own paintings. They can be 3D or 2D. That canvas is just your imagination ready to explore. People in art classes can express the way they feel by making art. People in art can make blueprints for contraptions. Teachers can do it so they can show the class the whole 360 view of the topic they are working on. So go ahead express yourself on paint 3D.

Therefore, I know this app will help students and teachers alike. So the app is recommended for people who want to let their creativity fly.

Smash Bros Ultimate Leaks September 2018

By Alejandro R.

Published September 25, 2018

We will be talking about Super Smash Bros Ultimate coming out exclusively on the Nintendo Switch on December 7. The community for these games are huge and the mystery of what new characters are coming, what is the new mode, and anything else that the fanbase is “patiently” waiting for.

Some people like to leak information, some are real, but most aren’t. Here are some very well made leaks that might be true and some leaks that are well let’s say they put “effort” into them.

1. Umm, it looks like someone drew this on paint, a 3 year old to be more specific. It’s said that Geno a very demanded character is going to be in Smash. Well first of all we have no idea where this person got this information and second of all this is just a drawing!

2. This one is that Funimation a streaming service, has leaked Goku. Goku is also very demanded as a playable fighter, but why does Funimation have this intel? Funimation, a random streaming service leaked Goku? Also they down do character introductions like that anymore.

3. The last one were doing and probably the most popular one. This leak shows us that someone who is probably Agnes Oblige from from Bravely Default, The Chorus Kids from Rhythm Heaven, Isaac from Golden Sun, Ken from Street Fighter, Isabelle from Animal Crossing, Shadow from Sonic The Hedgehog, Skull Kid from Legend of Zelda, and a mystery character. All of these are very popular characters that are very demanded.

First of all this person took a crude looking photo, like most leakers, for a random reason, weird if he wanted us to think it was real he would’ve taken a better photo from the game. Second of all I could’ve searched these photos up on my computer and put these because it is such an easy thing to do. Find popular characters find random photos of them take a photo with your IPod Touch and transfer them to MS Paint.

The Xbox One Adaptive Controller

By Kyle K.

Published September 25, 2018

For as long as anyone can remember, people with little to no mobility in their hands could not play video games. That makes sense, you can’t move your fingers or click the rough buttons then you can’t really play a video game. But then Xbox came in and make it possible for disabled people to be able to have as much fun with a game as anyone with the standard mobility. But how does it work you ask? Well the base controller is two big buttons that some use with their feet or elbows but are big enough to just click with the whole hand. It also comes with some attachments like some more big buttons to plug in, an arcade stick with a big sphere to move your character, and so much more to make jacks of all trades able to play there Xbox. but let's talk about what this means for other consoles like PS4, Nintendo switch, and PC, let’s knock those out one by one.

First the PS4. The PS4 controller is very similar to the standard Xbox controller with only the analog stick being different. With some practice, a disabled person could use this controller effectively but it would take years of practice to play on a normal person’s level. This push for gamer equality by Xbox makes the PS4 look like a bunch of jerks who don’t care, hurting there spot at the top of the console wars. Now the Nintendo switch controller is hard to use for anyone with normal capabilities, let alone someone with less movement in their hands. Now looking at Nintendo’s track record with motion controls and always letting out new types of controllers, it kind of shocks me they haven’t done this yet. Now the PC. There isn’t one company who controls the PC. There's a few different companies who do this. Microsoft already is doing this for there PC because the Xbox One adaptive controller works on microsoft PC’s as well. All other PC’s haven’t even tried controllers, but no expects them too any way and no one whos adaptive could even try clicking those small keyboard buttons.

All in all, Microsoft did an amazing thing by making gaming a pastime for anyone and everyone and I gained a lot of respect for them and hope PS4 and Nintendo witch do something akin to this too as I feel this should be the standard in making video games.

Game of the Month Fortnite (12 years and up): by Lynden S.

September 18, 2018

Now we all know this game, but Epic Games has showed us a new LTM (Limited Time Mode). The mode is The Getaway where players will try to get the Jewel Llama and take to one of the four Getaway Vans. With this new gamemode came new skins. These skins are slick with white suits and interchangeable masks that look like traditional playing cards.

The four masks are hearts, clubs, diamond, and ace. The other one is a girl with a red and white dress wearing high heels and a white mask that looks like an ace card.

They also come with the a glider which is a broken safe vault, the harvesting tool is a crowbar, and there is also a contrail, which is a trail that comes out of you when you're falling off the battle bus, it is litteral cash that comes out.

Overall, this is a good game that keeps on adding new stuff. This game is recommended if you like cartoon like games that can be played with a lot of your friends.

Hurricane Florence: by Abinaya S.

September 13, 2018

Late at night on September 12, hurricane Florence was downgraded to a category 2. However, conditions are still dangerous as the hurricane edges closer to landfall. As of 8 AM ET on September 13, the NHC (National Hurricane Center) released a statement reporting that Florence was centered about 170 miles southeast of Wilmington, NC, and 220 miles east of Myrtle Beach, SC.

The NHC says that Florence is a “large hurricane”, with its winds extending outward up to 80 miles from the center, and the tropical-storm winds extend out to 195 miles.

According to meteorologists, Florence is expected to finally make landfall over the coast of southern NC and eastern SC later today, on September 13. However, the forecast track has shifted relatively south and west, putting Georgia in its possible path of destruction.

Approximately 5.25 million residents are under hurricane watch or warnings, around the southeast coast of the United States.

Residents in Georgia will likely receive only heavy rains and tropical storm winds, but we must be prepared for Florence to shift its peril on us.
