The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.
National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS)
In FCPS elementary students study history, geography, civics, economics, and peoples of the nation and world. They practice social studies skills throughout the program as they learn to read, write, and think like historians. Effective social studies instruction requires students to engage in the investigation of social science and historical issues. Students must have the opportunity to ask questions, gather and evaluate sources, develop claims and use evidence, communicate and critique conclusions and take informed action.
The Elementary Social Studies Fair allows students to further develop their knowledge and skills in social studies and challenges them to be inventive and think creatively.
