The PLTW Biomedical Science program consists of four courses that give students hands-on experience with skills, tools and concepts used in a variety of research science and medical professions. They learn to work collaboratively with other students during advanced laboratory procedures and find solutions to real-life issues. The program culminates with students designing their own research projects that they conduct, troubleshoot and then create a professional poster to present their results.

Who can apply? Current 9th and 10th graders, to begin the following Fall.

When is the application due? Review of applications will begin on February 2, 2026 and will continue until the program fills. Note: Registration sheets for next year will be due BEFORE you will be notified of your application decision. If accepted, you will have to indicate which two courses you signed up for that you plan to drop and they will be replaced with PBS & HBS. Mr. Gill is the counselor who helps with Biomed, and he will make this change in your schedule request.
How long is the program? It is 4 courses, taken over 2 years. Students can begin in 10th or 11th grade.
Can rising seniors apply? Yes, but since you would only be able to take the first year of courses, we can't review your application until August 1 (if spaces are available).
How many students will be accepted? THS can accept up to 30 students in each cohort.
Can students earn college credits? Students have the potential to earn college credits (based on course grades and PLTW End of Course Assessment scores) through Stevenson University or Frederick Community College.

Can students earn an industry credential? Students have the opportunity during the 4th course (BI) to complete an MSDE-approved industry credential exam, the Biotechnology Aptitude & Competency Exam (BACE) through the University of Florida. MSDE covers the cost for each student to take the exam, which includes one free retake if needed.
I'm interested in learning more, can I shadow the program? Yes! You can observe the class and chat with the students and teacher. Shadowing is optional, and is not a requirement in order to apply. See the link above if you would like to shadow!
Is there an open house? Yes, we will have one during 4th block flex on December 10. Complete the form above if you'd like to attend!
