Prerequisite: Placement must first be determined through the IEP process
This elective course is designed to provide support to a student in core curricular areas and to provide direct instruction in specific learning strategies, study skills, time management, organization, and self-advocacy skills. Time is also allotted to address individual areas of need as identified in a student's Individual Educational Plan (IEP). While students may receive assistance on core curricular assignments, the course is not designed to serve as a study hall. Students enrolled in the course receive the equivalent of one period of instruction each day and earn an elective credit. This course may be taught for an elective credit all four years or more, as appropriate. Students successfully completing two years of this course will satisfy the sequential elective requirement for the Standard and Advanced Diploma. (Students may be awarded a half-credit upon completion of a full semester of placement in the Strategies for Success course. Such a decision is made by the school counselor in conjunction with the special education administrator.)

This course is designed to provide instruction to enhance personal development and interpersonal skills for students with disabilities. In addition, this course will provide social and/or emotional support in order to progress in the general education curriculum. Students who participate in the course have documented social and /or emotional needs in their individualized education program (IEP) and/or have a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). The areas of instruction for this course include peer relations, self-management, academic skills, compliance skills, and assertion skills. This course may be taught for an elective credit all four years or more, as appropriate. Students successfully completing two years of this course will satisfy the sequential elective requirement for the Standard and Advanced Diploma.
229633 ABLE ACADEMICS
This course is designed primarily for students with moderate to severe disabilities and focuses on vocational training, career awareness, and functional academics. Students will be enrolled into multiple blocks of ABLE ACADEMICS for a student’s schedule in PowerSchool. The course exposes students to a wide variety of language arts experiences guided by IEP objectives. Objectives may include vocabulary development, literature appreciation and comprehension, practical and formal written and oral communication skills, application of correct English usage and mechanics, and consumer information. Meeting the requirements of this course will qualify as an elective credit, not as a verified English credit. The course also focuses on individualized instruction with an emphasis on practical, everyday math skills, including computation, measurement, consumer math, and basic algebraic concepts. This elective course does not qualify a student for a verified math credit.
312033 PERSONAL LIVING AND FINANCES
Grades 9-12
This course extends the student’s knowledge of basic personal finance through the study of taxes, budgeting, managing debt, savings, and consumer rights and responsibilities. A strong emphasis is placed on making connections to real-world data and applications. It will prepare students for the workplace readiness skills assessment. Calculator and computer technologies will be used as tools wherever appropriate. It will count as an elective credit, meeting the Economics and Personal Finance graduation requirement (class of 2017 and beyond).

This option is available to high school students receiving special education services. Students explore potential career options while developing/improving skills needed for success in employment. Education for Employment teaches students to make informed career and continuing education choices as they transition from school, gain technical skills, and adapt to the workplace. Students are taught ethical behaviors, career-research, job-acquisition, workplace-communication, self-awareness, self-advocacy, customer-service, and to perform assignments essential to the operation school and community business. Students participate in career activities and work-based learning, explore various educational options, and develop or revise a plan related to their academic and career-related goals. Field trips and guest speakers will augment classroom lessons. Students will receive assistance in identifying and meeting their goals related to transitioning to post-secondary life. This course can be taken for more than one year. Students successfully completing two years of this course will satisfy the sequential elective requirement for the Standard diploma options. This career education course is designed for 11th and 12th graders.
770133 ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION/ FLE

Elective
This course is taught as a separate class or as a special grouping within standard physical education classes. This course is designed to develop specific gross motor and fine motor skills on an individualized basis. Students are only permitted to take this course with parental and teacher approval and a physician’s recommendation. FLE is taught when needed as a separate FLE course for students with special needs. It is taught in a small group format and is an adapted version of the regular FLE program. Students are eligible to take this course as a substitute for 9th and /or 10th grade FLE as indicated in their individual education plans.
