“Women’s History Month pays homage to the trailblazers before us, builds hope and inspiration to us and offers an example of pride and excellence for younger generations.”- Anonymous

Welcome to March, Winburn Middle families and students!

Our recent spring-like weather has assured us that Spring is just around the corner!  The month of February was one of my favorites as the principal of our school!  We celebrated the first-ever student-led conferences and I cannot tell you how pleased I am with the goals set by our students.  If you didn’t get to meet in a conference, but would like one, just call us!  We’d love to have you!

If you missed the opportunity to visit with us this past week during our Black History Month Celebration, I am so proud of how our school community came together to not only educate us, but celebrate our students and families. From the living museum of meeting Rosa Parks, Malcolm X and Harriett Tubman to musical performances and recitations by members of our community, students and staff,  I sat there feeling so proud of who we are as a school and how fortunate we are.  If you’d like to see these performances, please check out our school YouTube Channel by clicking here.  You’ll get to see performances from the Certified Winburn Steppers, our Winburn Chorus and so much more!

Thank you for all you do to support our students!  Families often ask me, “how can I help my student?” Sometimes our scholars in middle schools are reluctant to talk about what they are learning, but I have some suggestions below that might help! Ask your student about their academic goals and what they are learning in each class.  Some other helpful questions could be:

As we work together to help our students reflect on their learning, we will soon celebrate their academic success!

We have several important family and community engagement events coming up this month that we want you to be part of, including a school-wide celebration of Women’s History!  Details are below and we look forward to having you on our campus!

Upcoming Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Events

Please mark these dates on your calendar and make every effort to participate. Your involvement and engagement in your student’s education are essential for their success. We look forward to seeing you at Winburn Middle School.

Our families are crucial partners in this work. Thank you for everything you do at home to support the success of your student. Thank you for being a valued part of our Winburn Middle School community, and we look forward to a fantastic month!

Sincerely,

BJ Martin, Interim Principal, Winburn Middle School

Meeting Dates:

Saturday School Program at Winburn Middle: Since December, we have implemented a new preventative program to minimize unwanted behavior and reduce out-of-school suspension. We are committed to keeping our students in school as we continue to follow the FCPS Code of Conduct. Many times, some students repeatedly receive office referrals for minor infractions, and are assigned to RESET for 15 minutes to calm down before rejoining their class. Unfortunately, for some of our students, 15 minutes of RESET time does not change some of their behavior.

Because of this, we have implemented an Afterschool and a Saturday School Reflection Program. We would appreciate your assistance in talking with your child about being on his or her best behavior and the potential consequences if their misbehavior persists.

Should your child be assigned to After-school or Saturday School Reflection time:

Parents/Guardians will be notified one week prior to your child serving an afternoon or Saturday reflection. You will receive a reminder call and email. It is imperative that we maintain a safe learning environment that will support us in guiding our students to success.
