In Praise of Think-Pair-Share
Celebrating Think-Pair-Share, the Little Strategy That Could, and sharing some best practices for making it work for you.
Pinwheel Discussions: Texts in Conversation
Sarah Brown Wessling facilitates rigorous discussion in her AP English Literature classroom through a "Pinwheel Discussion" that requires a group of four students to take on the persona and character of three authors and a provocateur before engaging in a coffee house style debate/discussion. Groups of students with a common persona first work to develop effective questions, drawing from the text and considering the viewpoint of their assigned role.
Conver-Stations: A Discussion Strategy
Sarah Brown Wessling uses movement during small group discussion to help students deepen their conversations. Sarah asks only some students in each small group to move with each topic switch, allowing those students to carry the conversation from their previous group to the new group. By the end of the conversations, the students are able to synthesize all of the ideas into rich statements about an essential question.
