Day Five
Day Five
Yesterday I made a terrarium with the fifth grade. You can see the video on my videos page if you want. [or here's the link: Ms. Moore Makes a Terrarium]
Be creative using what you can find at your house and outside. Suggested materials: a glass or plastic jar [check your recycle bin or wait until your family finishes something like a jar of pasta sauce], soil [aka dirt], small rocks or pebbles, plants/seeds, moss [you may be able to find a piece of bark in your yard with moss], leaf litter [that's just fallen leaves], and small toys from around your home [optional]
Be sure to clean your jar before you start. You don't want moldy food or weird stuff growing that you aren't expecting.
Add a layer of gravel/rocks/pebbles to the bottom of the jar. This will allow the water to drain if you accidentally overwater your terrarium.
Next add some leaf litter above your gravel. This will keep your soil/dirt above your gravel.
Add dirt/soil. You will want it to be moist, not dry, but not wet either.
Now get creative.... add your plants/seeds. Experiment with your different plants. If you are careful, you can dig up the roots of things in your yard. I think I might try a dandelion seed in mine to see what happens. You could add rocks or toys. Whatever, you want here! Be creative. Find things in your house or outside.
To maintain the terrarium, water it as soon as it’s looking a little dry.
Take a picture of your new terrarium work and submit it
