DISTRICT SCIENCE FAIR PAGE: https://www.fcps.net/Page/5469
Our annual Science Fair is an exciting event that encourages students to learn to think like scientists. Over the next couple of months, your child will design a Science Fair project that uses the scientific method to solve a real-life problem. The educational benefits are many. Your child will develop skills in writing, oral presentation, critical thinking, science processes, mathematics, and problem-solving.
SCAPA Science Fair is MANDATORY for all 5th-grade students.
(Participation in the science fair for 5th graders will include required checkpoints and be counted as part of the science grade.)
SCAPA Science Fair is OPTIONAL for 4th-grade students.
(Participation in the science fair for 4th graders is optional. You must submit your project idea to Ms. Moore by October 29 in writing with a parent signature.)
FCPS information and forms for participation can be accessed on the FCPS Science Fair Website.
All elementary projects must be AT SCHOOL on January 9th to participate in the school science fair.
Fourth graders choosing to participate must submit a project proposal with PARENT SIGNATURE by October 29. This is the only check-in required for fourth-grade participants. Proposal forms are available outside Ms. Moore's classroom or can be accessed here.

Click here to see all the projects submitted in previous years.
Important Due Dates for 5th Graders are below. These due dates are for FIFTH GRADE students only.
Links to student materials are available on your student's Canvas page.
** All projects are due on January 9th. Project includes a science fair board. [See examples here] and a completed science notebook, which may be the completed paper "science fair planning packet" or a digital version of that information.
Fifth grade students should bring their projects to the science lab on January 9, 2023, not before. If the project is not turned in on January 9th, the student's grade will be lowered 10 points per day it is late. Students not submitted their project by January 10th are ineligible to advance to the district science fair.
All other elementary participants should bring their project on January 9th to the science lab, but these projects will not be graded. They will be judged as part of the school science fair on January 10th.
On September 13th, students were given a packet with the following:
The Official "Rules" packet from Fayette County Public Schools
This is information about the science fair that is distributed to all students in the district to given common guidelines for families about participation in the science fair. This packet includes the official "rules" for science fair, categories, judging criteria, and more.
One thing to note: If your child wants to complete a project that includes any humans and/or animals, they must have their idea approved at a district level BEFORE they begin their experiment. Once the students submit their question, I will send home the proper forms for those students to submit to be approved. This is simply a safety measure for students to ensure that they are not conducting experiments that may be unsafe. Typically, approval is not a problem and happens within a week of submission. ISEF has specific guidelines related to the use of chemicals, human subjects, and vertebrate animals. Students may visit the ISEF web site at www.sciserv.org/isef to access these guidelines.
The "Science Fair Planning Packet" [You can access another copy here]
Students must have a science fair notebook/packet as part of their final submission.
This work can either be the completed paper copy in this packet, or students may create a digital notebook with the same information.
THE COMPLETED PLANNING PACKET (OR DIGITAL VERSION) WILL BE SUBMITTED AND GRADED WITH THE FINAL PROJECT BOARD AS PART OF THE SCIENCE FAIR GRADE.
In class we completed mini-lessons about each of the elements required for the project.
Here is a completed packet for reference. We did not complete all the practice items in the packet. It is meant to be a helpful reference.
