Helpful Information About Third Grade

Welcome Information

This information packet will give you an overview of our classroom routines. Please go over this with your child.

Daily/Weekly Information

School begins at 8:30. Third grade will line up inside the third grade hall near their lockers. The class signs will be posted. At dismissal, if you are picking up your child at the end of the day please meet them at the West doors. I will be walking ALL students from our class to their dismissal area (bus, car, Y-Care, walkers). You will not need to enter the building. Please send a note if you have a change in dismissal procedure.

Daily Folders

Every day your child will be bringing home a green folder. This folder will need to be returned each day. Your child will use the plastic folder as his/her Daily Folder.

Homework

Your child will have homework assignments almost every night. If your child does not have any homework, I still encourage them to use a set homework time each evening to read, practice math facts, or work on stories for their writing workshop. Having a set homework time will help kids develop good study habits that will certainly come in handy as they get older. If you find that your child rarely has any homework or is spending too much time on homework, please review his/her Agenda Book and/or call me for a conference.

Absences

If your child is absent for two or more days, please contact the office and I will provide make-up work. However, please remember that a lot of what goes on in our classroom (experiments, reader/writer workshop, projects, etc.) cannot be recreated at home. If you are going on an extended trip, I do not provide make-up work. Instead, the child could keep a detailed written journal of the trip and present the journal to the class when he/she returns.

Birthdays

Birthday treats are optional. If you choose to bring a treat for the class, bring enough for everyone, please. Remember that we have peanut allergies in the class, so treats need to be nut free. Our class will recognize this person with a song, a card, and a treasure chest drawing in class.

Snack

In the morning and afternoon students are allowed to eat a quick, nutritious snack while we are working. Snacks are optional and must be nutritious. Students are responsible for bringing their own. All snacks must be nut free. Please have students bring in spoons if needed to eat his/her snack (applesauce, yogurt, etc.)

Parent Volunteers

I love having parents in the classroom to work on various projects or participate by working on things at home. Please let me know if you are interested. A volunteer sign-up sheet will be available at curriculum night.

Note: Volunteers must sign in with the main office and wear the badge throughout the building. New volunteers to Hillside must complete paperwork (as required by law) to work with children in the school setting. This paperwork authorizes the district to do a background check on any volunteers working with children. Since this step is necessary for parents wishing to chaperone field trips, you may wish to submit the paperwork at the beginning of the year.

Please consider joining our amazing PTA, Parent Teacher Association. The PTA Website is https://sites.google.com/site/hillsidehuskiespta/. The do so much for our school!

Book Orders

During the year I will be sending home book orders. When ordering, please send in a CHECK (written to Scholastic Book clubs)--Only one check is necessary, even if your order from multiple flyers. I also post the book order online, so you may review it there and use a credit card to purchase the books. Points earned from the book club will be used to purchase books and supplies for the classroom. There is never an obligation to buy.

  • Online instructions:
  • 1. SIGN UP at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs. One the parent page, click the "Register" button in the "First Time Here?" section. Register for your own user name and password. When prompted, enter the one-time Class Activation Code HBW4L. This unique code ensures that your order is sent to our classroom.
  • 2. SELECT the books you'd like to order--choose from thousands of titles--many more than in our monthly flyers.
  • 3. SEND your order to me online by the due date and your child's books will be delivered directly to our classroom.
