'Our true honor': FPS middle school staffs battle for charity
Even though her team didn't win, East Middle School teacher Whitney Tyner was smiling ear-to-ear at the end of Friday's Battle of the Middles."This is the most incredible event in Farmington," she said. "We have so much fun, everybody's here for charity, and it's a great workout."Held at Harrison High School in Farmington Hills, the 12th annual charity basketball game raises funds and collects canned goods and toys for Farmington Area Goodfellows and Farmington/Farmington Hills Neighborhood House. While 2016 totals won't be available for a while, last year's game netted $9, 346, more than 1,000 non-perishable food items, 276 new toys, and 42 new books. Farmington Area Goodfellows President Richard Lerner, left, is pictured (above and below) with Farmington Public Schools Superintendent Dr. George Heitsch at Battle of the Middles XII. Tyner and Warner Middle School teacher Kathy Koperski took over the event last year, after founder Marc Szalka left the district. "He asked if anybody was willing to take it on," Tyner said. "Kathy and I couldn't let something this great die. It's our true honor." While the charities won overall, the North team – staff from Warner and Central Office and alumni – overpowered staff from East and Power Middle Schools 87-70.Learn more about Farmington Area Goodfellows and Neighborhood House at farmingtonareagoodfellows.org.
