All students are required to take a music class in 6th grade. Students can choose from orchestra, band, choir, or general music. In all music classes, students will learn and focus on the National Music Standards, which are responding, creating, connecting, and performing.
In orchestra, students will continue to learn how to play the instrument they started in 5th grade. Orchestra students will have their instrument sectional every other day and meet as a large ensemble during the school day. Orchestra students will have several performances throughout the school year. Orchestra is a year-long course and is a multi-year activity that students can continue into high school.
*If your child did not participate in orchestra as a 5th grader but would like to join in 6th, please contact an orchestra teacher for more information.

In general music, students will continue to explore music through listening, responding, and creating, similar to their elementary music class. It is a year-long course with class that meets every other day.
Students interested in participating in music beyond 6th grade should not choose general music, as it is not offered past 6th grade.
Fargo Public Schools is committed to making music available to every student, which means that students can fully participate in music ensembles during the school day. Additionally, students will participate in sectionals or small group classes.
For example, if a student plays violin, they will have both a violin class and an orchestra class built into their schedule. Their violin sectional class will meet every other day and will rotate with gym. This student will also have a large ensemble rehearsal for orchestra that meets during their advisory time on rotational schedule. The rotation schedule also allows for students to play an instrument and sing in a choir.
Below are some example student schedules:
Students enrolled in band, orchestra, or choir can also participate in extra-curricular ensembles before or after school. Some of these ensembles include honor band, chamber orchestra, honor choir, Band Festival of Fun (BFF), Surround the State in Song, and the 6th Grade Honors Orchestra Festival. These ensembles are not required but are provided for an additional playing opportunity.
Fargo Public Schools is committed to making music available to every student in our district. Cost should not be a factor in whether or not a student participates in music. If financial assistance is needed to provide this opportunity for your child, please use the contact links to make arrangements with your child's future teacher.
