Entry Strandards
Entry to the course is open to all trainees who intend to be certificated as Ratings Forming Part of a Navigational Watch.
They must be medically fit to enable them to participate in all aspects of the training particularly the practical exercises.
Course Intake Limitations
The number of trainees shall not exceed twenty-four (24) per class.
Course Outline
Contribute to monitoring and controlling a safe watch
Shipboard terms and definitions
Basic environmental protection procedures
Understanding orders and to communicate with the officer of the watch on matters relevant to watchkeeping duties
Internal communication and alarm systems
Information required to maintain a safe watch
Procedures for the relief, maintenance and handover of a watch
Keep a proper look-out by sight and hearing
Responsibilities of a look-out
Steer the ship and also comply with helm orders in the English language
Helm orders
Use of magnetic and gyro compasses
Change-over procedures
Operate emergency equipment and apply emergency procedures
Emergency duties and alarm signals
Pyrotechnic distress signals, satellite EPIRBs and SARTs
Avoidance of false distress alerts and action to be taken in event of accidental activation
