The Franklin & Marshall men's basketball team (9-6, 1-2 Centennial) prepares for a pair of home Centennial Conference games this week, as they host Haverford on Wednesday and Dickinson on Saturday. The Diplomats look to clear a two-game losing run following losses to Johns Hopkins (77-70, 1/18) and (RV) Gettysburg (74-72, 1/15). Entering the week, Kevin Nowoswiat looks to extend his double-figure scoring streak that dates back to the season opener, and Josh Parra stands 16 points away from becoming the program's 37th 1,000-point club member.
Last Week
F&M was unable to earn a win last week following defeats to (RV) Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins. The Diplomats built an eight-point lead with ten minutes to go in the second half before falling 74-72 to Gettysburg on Wednesday night. Vakaris Grauslys led the team with 26 points and four assists. He converted 9-of-22 field goals, 3-of-11 threes, and 5-of-6 free throws. Dylan Cormac delivered 16 points from the bench, not missing on his four three-point field goals. Nowoswiat contributed 17 points, going 6-of-12 on field goals, and 4-of-4 on free throws. Gettysburg countered a game-opening layup from F&M with back-to-back threes, but F&M soon tied things at 10-10. The Bullets soon earned a 22-16 lead with 10:15 remaining in the first half, but F&M got back within a point via threes from Cormac and Grauslys. They eventually entered halftime behind 38-36. F&M scored the first four points of the half for their first lead since the first basket of the game. The teams swapped the lead several times following this, until F&M broke free with a 10-2 run to lead 55-47 with 11:30 left. Gettysburg called timeout and returned with a 9-2 run to draw within one point. The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes, and F&M trailed 71-70 lead with 0:51 left. The Diplomats missed a three on their next possession and then conceded a pair of free throws. A Grauslys driving layup put F&M back within a point at 73-72, but the Bullets sank 1 of 2 free throws on their next chance. The Diplomats missed their next shot and were forced to foul, but the Bullets missed both free shots to give the Diplomats a chance with five seconds left. Grauslys' long-range three attempt at the buzzer was inaccurate.
Nowoswiat recorded a career-high 30 points in the loss to Johns Hopkins on Saturday. He was a perfect 9-of-9 on free throws, 9-of-13 on field goals, and 3-of-4 on threes while leading the team with five assists. The teams traded buckets for the rest of the half, with F&M eventually leading 31-29 at the halftime intermission. Neither team led by more than two points through the first 9:30 of the second half After six ties and seven lead changes, Johns Hopkins broke away via an 11-2 run over a three-minute spell. Nowoswiat brought the lead within five points with five points of his own, but the Blue Jays soon led by double figures again. F&M got no closer than four points before falling 77-70. F&M lost the rebound battle 37-28 and struggled with 17 turnovers.
