“Democracy is a discussion,” said the first president of Czechoslovakia, Tomas Garrigue Masaryk. Open and informed discussion is an essential component of a healthy and democratic society. We asked ourselves what Masaryk would say if he saw the state of public discussion today—shaped by algorithms, echo chambers, and a growing tendency to seek out only the information and communities that confirm existing beliefs. This selective exposure reduces empathy, discourages openness to differing opinions, and contributes to increasing political and ideological polarization, ultimately weakening our democracies.
The objective of our project was to mitigate these effects by promoting critical thinking, constructive debate, and informed civic engagement. We aimed to support young people in developing the skills necessary to engage in democratic dialogue and contribute meaningfully to public life. In particular, we sought to empower active youth workers to become agents of change in their communities by fostering their ability to think critically, discuss controversial topics respectfully, and navigate today’s complex information landscape.
As a part of the project, participants prepared papers introducing topics of their interest. They prepared statements and then arguments in favour and against and conclusion. On this website, you can find the papers that will for sure make you think out of the box. All the topics are listed below:
