Character Composition

For this composition, you will create music to capture the spirit of a literary character (from a book). For example, if you choose an evil character like Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter series, you could make the music harsh and aggressive sounding. If you choose a lighthearted character like Matilda, you could make the music upbeat and cheerful. Here is a list of characters you could potentially use, but if you have another famous literary character in mind, just ask Mr. Proctor:

  • Katniss Everdeen
  • Edward Cullen
  • Bella Swan
  • Hermione Granger
  • Frodo Baggins
  • Ebenezer Scrooge

  1. Start by listing qualities of your character.
  2. Next, you will create a map of the structure of your song using, intro, verse, chorus, bridge, and ending. You may create additional sections if you want. Write out the map on the worksheet.
  3. Look through Soundation’s library to find sounds that match the qualities of your character that you listed in step 1. You can use particular loops as themes throughout your song. Once you use a sound, it will appear in "Project" tab in the upper-right hand corner of the screen.
  4. Begin to build the verse and chorus of your song. Don't add automation or effects yet, just build the basic framework.

You must use at least one MIDI instrument, drums, melody, and accompaniment. Use the techniques you learned in previous assignments to express your character: matching tempos, automation, layering, melody and harmony, theme and variation, and MIDI channels.
