Caring for your Device: Math

Chromebook Guidelines

chromebook guidelines presentation

Includes Steps 1 and 2 Below.

Step 1

Watch how to care for your device video.

1. Project the video and watch with students.

Step 2

Discuss the following items with students.

Taking Care of the Chromebook

  • Students are responsible for the general care of the Chromebook they have been issued by the school.

  • Students with Chromebooks that are broken or fail to work properly must take the device to one of the Chromebook support areas within the school as soon as possible so that they can be taken care of properly.

  • District-owned Chromebooks should never be taken to an outside computer service for any type of repair or maintenance.

  • Students should never leave their Chromebooks unattended except when locked in their hallway locker.

DISTRIBUTION

Middle school students will receive their Chromebooks a fews days after the Parent Information Session being held on the Open House evening. The high schools will follow a different schedule, staggering distribution by grade level. FLHS will distribute to 9th graders during their orientation, and FWHS will distribute to 9th graders during the first two weeks of school.

Students will receive a Chromebook, as well as a charger. Middle school students will also receive a protective carrying case. Students are responsible for providing their own personal headphones. Optional accessories include the following: a mouse, an additional charger, and/or any necessary adaptors.

Chromebooks, like a textbook, must be returned in good condition. Should a student move schools or leave town, the Chromebook, charger and case must be returned before leaving.

DAILY EXPECTATIONS

Students are expected to care for their Chromebooks and are responsible for the care and function of the device. See the Student Chromebook Care Section for more information.

Students are expected to come to school with their Chromebooks fully charged (Middle School: in their cases) Chargers MUST be left at home. Should a student forget to charge their Chromebook, a loaner will be provided from the library (if available). Students are expected to return the loaner at the end of the same school day. There will be some charging areas available around the school, but they will be limited so it is important for students to develop a routine to plug devices in at home before they go to bed in the evening.

Should a device need repair, a student can leave the device with the library staff for repair by the Computer Technician. Students may borrow a loaner device at that time and will be notified when their device is ready to be picked up. At that time, a student will return the loaner and receive the original Chromebook.

No one, other than the student should be using the device. It is designed for school work only.

PERSONAL PRIVACY ON THE CHROMEBOOK

The Chromebooks are school-owned devices, and as such, will be equipped with monitoring software managed by the technical team in order to keep our students safe. The monitoring software collects data about the activity of a student while using the device at school AND at home. There should be no expectation of a student's personal privacy from district oversight on the Chromebook or using any of the district's online applications via a login, including Chrome, Google Apps, Office 365, etc.

At school, using the FPS WIFI, students operate with the CEN Internet Filter for protection while online. Away from school, students may connect to home WIFI or public WIFI. However, most home and public WIFI services do not provide a filter. Parents are responsible for monitoring student activity while online.

A re-usable web camera cover will be provided with each Chromebook. Please keep the web camera covered at all times unless using the camera to record video.

It is highly recommended that students use and charge their chromebook in a public space at home and away from sleeping areas so that students are learning to prioritize healthy sleeping habits.

IMPORTANT! As has been the case for many years, if a student is logged in to district applications using a family-owned device, the monitoring software still applies. Students accessing FPS software are operating within the “walls” of our school. If a student has regular access to a family-owned device, please be sure to maintain personal privacy of any parties by completely logging out of the Fairfield Public Schools applications and Chrome browser.

General Precautions

  • No food or drink should be next to Chromebooks.

  • Cords, cables, and removable storage devices (e.g. thumb drives) must be inserted carefully into appropriate port on the Chromebooks.

  • Chromebooks should not be used or stored near pets.

  • Chromebooks should not be used with the power cord plugged in when the cord may be a tripping hazard.

  • Chromebooks must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, and labels. You may ONLY decorate and write on the case provided by FPS.

  • Heavy objects should never be placed on top of Chromebooks.

  • Chromebooks should never be loaned to another student or individual during the school day or otherwise.

Carrying Chromebooks

  • Always transport Chromebooks with care. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action.

  • Students should hold the Chromebooks (cover closed) with two hands if they need to carry the Chromebook anywhere inside or outside of the classroom during instructional time.

  • Never lift a Chromebook by the screen.

  • Never carry a Chromebook with the screen open.

  • Chromebooks should always be carried/transported in a protective case, bag, or sleeve

  • The Chromebook must be closed before placing it any cases, bags, or sleeves

  • Some carrying cases can hold other objects (such as folders and workbooks), but these must be kept to a minimum to avoid placing too much pressure and weight on the Chromebook screen

  • Nothing should be placed on top of the Chromebook when stored in a school locker.

  • Students are encouraged to take their Chromebooks home each day, regardless of whether or not they are needed in order to keep them charged and ready for use in school.

  • Under no circumstance should Chromebooks be left unattended or unsupervised as they are at risk of being stolen.

Opening the Chromebook

  • Open the Chromebook only when it is resting on a flat surface such as a table or desk.

  • To open the Chromebook, use one hand to hold the keyboard against the table. Use the other hand to open the screen by grasping the screen’s edge (in the middle) and gently moving the screen to the open position. (Figure 1. Opening a Chromebook.)

  • The hinge of the screen will only allow the screen to be open to a slight angle. Do not attempt to open the screen beyond this stopping point as the screen will break if forced.

Closing the Chromebook

  • Before closing the screen, make sure there is nothing on the keyboard to prevent the full closure of the device. Obstacles on the keyboard could cause broken screens or damaged hinges.

  • Be careful there are no obstructions when closing the screens (pens, power cables, etc.)

  • Close the screen only when the Chromebook is resting on a flat surface such as a table or desk.

  • Close the Chromebook using two hands–one at either corner of the screen (Figure 2. Closing a Chromebook.)

  • Close the screen gently.

Screen Care

  • The Chromebook screen can be damaged if subjected to heavy objects, rough treatment, some cleaning solvents, and other liquids. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure.

    • Do not put pressure on the top of a Chromebook when it is closed.

    • Do not store a Chromebook with the screen open.

    • Do not place anything in the protective case that will press against the cover.

    • Make sure there is nothing on the keyboard before closing the lid (e.g. pens, pencils, or disks).

    • Never lift the Chromebook by the screen.

    • Only clean the screen with a soft, dry microfiber cloth or anti-static cloth.

Other Guidelines

  • You will be supplied a Chromebook and a charger. If you like would to bring in additional items such as a mouse you may bring those in as needed.

  • Headphones are required. Please make sure to have your headphones each day.

  • Chromebooks should be powered OFF before storing to preserve battery life and in order for it to receive updates regularly.

  • Avoid putting any pressure or weight on the Chromebook.

  • When cleaning your screen use a soft, dry cloth (preferably a micro-fiber cloth). Do not use cleansers.

  • Never leave the Chromebook where it could be subject to extreme temperatures (i.e. car).
