introduction

Fu-An Elementary School, a Hakka based school at the boundry of Qishan and Meinong with simple folkway and harmonious lifestyle, is located in Meinong District, Kaohsiung City. The majority of parents rely on farming which enable the development of distingushing feature of learning content that combines the school education and local life.

1. Development of Curriculum: There are two main topics in the food and agriculture education - "Fortunate Village" and "Healthy and Safe Farming". This is the 12th year that the school teachers, the students, and the parents experience together the organic farming method. Through the farming experience that corresponds to the changing seasons, considering the ecological environment and food safety, and the concert performance, the teachers and the students get to expreience the wisdom of the ancestors, which which makes the food and agriculture lesson more diverse and exciting.


2. Inheriting Hakka Culture: The school, located in a rich Hakka culture, is designed in the form of the tobacco barn that provides curriculums in Hakka dance, the art of speaking, Hakka music, the classical Chinese music - Guzheng. Hakka language and Hakka culture are both integrated in the teaching to cultivate the students' interest in learning Hakka language and the local culture in a diverse manner.


3. Emphasis on Environmental Ecology: The school prides itself as an open learning environment. In addition, the implementation of environmental education is another main focus of the curriculum suchh as courses on environmental exploration, animal and plant surveys, hand-made maker, etc. The school aims to bring the learning, combines the five senses of experience, closer to the life experience through the means of participating in the research competition at science exhibitions.


4. Implementation of Global Networks: Since 2019, the languages of Hakka, Chinese, and English are taught at the school. In addition to the trilingual learning environment, classes on life and arts are taught in English by experienced foreign teachers in collaboration with experienced Chinese teachers for the application of language in daily life. Through an on-campus English certification method, English is learned happily at an early age.


5. Development of Critical Thinking: Through the exploration of ecological research and guided tour of the plants on campus, the students build up the ability of independent thinking and problem solving which has always been the educational philosophy at Fu-An Elementary School. In recent years, the students have established self-confidence and have won many national and city-wide competitions on the scientific research topics.



Fu-An Elementary School aims to build a comprehensive learning environment that inspires students on local caring, cultural learning, issue exploration, and global networks. The life-wide learning environment nourishes the ability for each student to face the future challenge.





Food and agriculture education

Food and agriculture education is one of the four main topics in the curriculum. Its main concept is "Eco-friendly farming, self-sufficiency, safe agriculture, and healthy meal". Since 2007, all students and teachers have been participated in the farming activity and have ccumulated a wealth of experience in farming over the years.


"Environment, Life, and Culture" are the three aspects in foor and agriculture education. In addition to integrating teaching in various fields, the rich activity experience is transformed into the development of the curriculum to systematically organized the food and agriculture education.





Sustainable Campus Project


Sustainable Campus Project is implemented at Fu-An Elelmentary School. Through the application of SDGs indicator concept, identifying problems, and proposing solutions for improvement, combined with the curriculum correlates the school revision and department regulations, the literacy-oriented learning of cross-disciplinary and issue-integration enables the students to respond to the future life and challenges.


Based on the existing condiditon at Fu-An, the campus would be investigated to improve the learning environment, such as shading and ventilation. Furthermore, the improvement would prevent the spread of diseases and protect one's own health. In conbination with the exercises of disaster prevention and fire evacuation, the possible hazards would be identified and responded to for a sustanable campus.
