Lipid-lowering therapies are given to anyone with existing atherosclerotic disease and anyone who is at risk of developing it.
Typically, atorvastatin 20mg ON is prescribed initially, if non-HDL cholesterol has not fallen by >40%, consider titrating up to 80mg.
ATORVASTATIN 80mg ON is prescribed initially, if tolerated.
Statins should be taken before bed as cholesterol synthesis occurs predominantly at night, therefore statins will have greatest effect when given overnight. This is especially true for simvastatin which has a short half-life (3 hours)
Statins generally have a half-life of 1-3 hours with the exception of atorvastatin which is 14 hours.
