Charles Tolliver is a self-taught trumpeter, composer, arranger, and co-founder of Strata-East Records. After launching his career with Jackie McLean on Blue Note Records in 1964, Tolliver collaborated with legends like Roy Haynes, Horace Silver, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, and Max Roach. In 1969, he formed his innovative quartet Music Inc, and the following year, co-founded Strata-East with pianist Stanley Cowell, creating a vital platform for artist-driven jazz.
In partnership with Mack Avenue Music Group, these releases have been lovingly restored with remastered audio transferred directly from the original analog tapes.
As Strata-East’s debut release, Music Inc by Charles Tolliver set the standard for creative expression, artistic freedom, and musical mastery that Tolliver and co-founder Stanley Cowell exemplified throughout their celebrated careers. Recorded on November 11, 1970, Music Inc is a masterclass in executing a singular creative vision for large ensembles, with the core band—led by Tolliver’s expertise—featuring Cowell on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jimmy Hopps on drums.
