About the Teacher
I have taught full time at Excel Academy since 2000 and began my association with the school as a founding parent in 1995. I am dedicated to Excel's fundamental charter philosophy of engaging students with challenging content, while developing their academic abilities and building critical thinking skills. Caring for every child's social and emotional needs is paramount and a precursor to learning, and my goals always include increasing students' sense of wonder and interest in their world.
I received my B.A. from the University of Northern Colorado in 1980 with a major in elementary education and a minor in music performance. I'm a life-long learner and continually pursue formal and informal professional growth opportunities. I completed my M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction through Western Governors University in December, 2016.
In November, 2010, I became a National Board Certified Teacher -- the culmination of two years' work, and in 2012, I passed the Colorado PLACE exam leading to a Gifted/Talented endorsement. I also was selected, through a competitive application process, to participate in the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy -- a week-long professional development course for 3rd-5th grade teachers, focusing on physics and math. This was an incredible experience with many lessons that can be applied in our classroom. Wind bags and Bernoulli's principle, anyone? (Ask your children!)
On a personal note, I cherish time spent with Chris, my husband of 37 years, Sarah, our adult daughter, extended family, and friends. Other loves include Rockies' baseball (win or lose, although it's more fun when they win), mountain walks, reading, holiday cooking, watching old movies, and hotly contested family games.
