COVID-19 Pandemic Special Education Program Updates

Dear Families,

Just prior to winter break, Governor Inslee announced new guidance for schools in preparation for a return to in-person learning. The changes to our guidelines were made upon review of current studies regarding Covid transmission rates in schools. Following this announcement, Superintendent Mike Merlino released this informational video about bringing students back into our schools in 2021. Updates to in-person instruction are posted on the Evergreen Public Schools website

As Evergreen welcomes our Kindergarten through 5th grade students back to school in small cohorts over the next few weeks, We will also expand our in-person services for students with disabilities in Preschool through Transition services. Schools and IEP managers are contacting families as we begin phasing in the additional in person instruction in Elementary Schools beginning January 19th following the updated guidelines.

We will begin increasing the number of students that receive special education services in Middle and High Schools served in person starting the week of January 19. Schools and IEP managers will be contacting families as services are phased in.

We understand there may be some students who will be unable to attend in-person classes for reasons related to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you have concerns about your child attending in-person classes, please contact your IEP manager. Students who need to access their special education services through remote instruction will continue to receive them in that manner.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding as we make adjustments in response to this news from the Governor and State Health Department.

With appreciation,

Jey Buno

Executive Director of Special Services
