The trip started with in-trepidation as we waited for confirmation that the weather would calm down just enough for us to make the but trip to Washington. At 9am the word came over from transportation, the trip was on! We got on the bus and left for Olympia.
The bus ride was great and we arrived in Olympia in time for our scheduled tour. We split into two groups and went off on our own experiences. Fourth grade started out in the Temple of Justice visiting the supreme court. Our tour guide was fantastic. She explained the importance of the supreme court and how appeals work.
When we left the Temple of Justice to tour the Capital building we walked by a protest in progress. The protesters were quiet and kept to themselves. We continued on and entered the Capital through a side door. We walked upstairs to the most beautiful room in the capital, the State Reception room. While here we were joined by Representative Paul Harris who spent time with the students, answering their questions. We ended our time with Rep. Harris by taking a group photo.
Continuing on the tour, we first stopped by the office of the Secretary of State, then we visited the Senate and then the House of Representatives. And even though everyone had gone home for the day, we had the opportunity to see where the governing bodies of Washington make decisions about the State.
As we made our way through the building we stopped to look at the Dome from above on the 2nd floor and then again down below. The grandeur was impressive and the students were quiet in observance of the structure. We walked out onto the front steps where we again stopped to take pictures of our group in front of the Capitol Building.
After an engaging tour we were ready to get back on the busses and head for Vancouver where we arrived back at HCA to our families.
This month's math project is a Math Story book. Student and families can use the book "The Math Curse" as inspiration for their own story book or creatively design their own story. The project can be created and turned-in in a variety of ways. All must submit a brief summary of the book and how the project was completed in the itslearning assignment.
