Introduction To Art students created these two images after researching Scratchboard artworks and artists.
Concepts- knowing and using these will make your work more beautiful and artistic.
· Contrast- difference of value (black to white), size of shapes, texture, line thickness
· Depth- foreground, middle-ground, and background, shading, size, higher in composition
· Variety- using several techniques, lines, and shapes in one artwork
· Movement- lines and shapes composed to direct the eye around and within an artwork
· Light Direction- shown with shading and shadows to create depth
· Line Thickness- makes variety, adds emphasis, shows direction, makes movement
Tools- All or a few of the following tools can be used to create scratchboard art: blade handle with exchangeable blades, wire brush, steel wool, transfer and tracing paper, straightedge, ballpoint pen, pencil, colored ink and pastel, watercolor brush, chalk.
Techniques- pulling, specking (dots), hatch and cross-hatching, chattering (skipping), scumbling, repetition, swirling, twin tools, brush tool.
Scratch Boarding Vocabulary
Chattering- skipping a cutting tool across a surface to leave a dotted mark
Pastel- like chalk, can be used to transfer image to scratchboard
Scratchboard- paper or board with a coating over white or colors
Specking- flicking a cutting tool on a surface to leave a mark
Transfer Paper- a paper that is coated with graphite for transferring a design to another surface
Whetstone- a sharpening stone used for sharpening metal blades
