Kumihimo Weaving/Braiding Notes
Knowledge- Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese weaving technique originally used to make braided cords. Kumihimo looms are used to make complex braids. The historical use of the cords was by Samurai as both a functional and decorative way to lace their armor and their horses' armor. Kumihimo cords are now used as ties on cultural haori jackets and obijime, which are used for tying on an obi (kimono sash). Most recently Kumihimo bracelets have become a popular jewelry form.
Safety- If you make your own beginners loom be careful when making the hole in the middle.
Vocabulary-
1. Loom- An apparatus for making thread or yarn into cord or cloth or rug.
2. Weave- To make (cord or cloth or rug) by interlacing the threads or strings.
3. Braid- To interweave three or more strands, strips, or lengths in a diagonally overlapping pattern.
4. Silk- A fine shiny fiber produced by certain insect larvae to form cocoons, especially the strong, elastic, fibrous secretion of silkworms used to make thread and fabric.
Advanced Link- Braids or Weaves that require more advanced looms and many more strings.
Kumihimo Evaluation
Three practice cords (bracelets) 6 each= 18 points
Final cord has extra 30 points possible. The final cord could be the 3rd practice or another cord made after practice cords are done.
Best cord evaluation:
· Consistent weave 10 points. -minus 1 point each change in consistency
· Error free = 10 points. -1 point each weaving error
· 3 things woven into the cord/bracelet = 10 points. – 2 points each missing additional thing
Practice grading your own, then switch papers and grade.
Put your initials on the top middle with the final score.
