Meet Our 2023 Poet-Presenters
Adam Gottlieb (he/they) is a Chicago-born poet, musician, teaching-artist and cultural worker. This year he is one of the nominees for the inaugural Poet Laureate of the City of Chicago. As a youth he was featured in the documentary film Louder Than A Bomb about the poetry slam festival by the same name. He leads the Fusion band Adam Gottlieb and OneLove. Since 2010 he has performed and taught music and poetry widely throughout the Chicago area, the U.S., and even internationally. This will be his 11th consecutive year co-leading the Poetry Week programming at ETHS.
Toly Walker is an English teacher, poet, and sponsor/mentor/inspirer of many student poets. Ms. Walker has been an educator for over 20 years at Chicago-area schools and has coached several ETHS teams at Chicago's Louder Than A Bomb (LTAB) Youth Poetry Festival.
Brad Baum is an English teacher at Evanston Township High School and a longtime fan of spoken word poetry. Inspired by the likes of Rudy Francisco, Sarah Kay, Ocean Vuong, Adam Falkner, and so many more, he is passionate about the ways in which poetry and creative writing can provide students with a better understanding of their individual voices and the way that they navigate their worlds.
Darius Rashad Parker (He/Him) is a Queer Black Scholar, Activist, Poet, and Performer based in Chicago, IL. Darius has a BA in Journalism with a minor in Black Studies from NIU and an MA in Critical Ethnic Studies from DePaul University.
Darius has been a member of the Kuumba Lynx Performance Ensemble since 2005 and has also served as Resource Coordinator for Kuumba Lynx, in partnership with Uplift HS. As a current Local School Council Community Representative at Uptown's Brennemann Elementary School, Darius demonstrates a commitment to centering the whole person in a way that involves children, family, and community partners. Darius's goal is to empower youth through the arts and to make any experience involving youth, art, and poetry one infused with love, liberation, and truth.
Audax the Damsel is a bilingual rapper born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and raised in the greater Chicago area. She is currently studying philosophy and German at Northwestern University. Inspired by the likes of Sa-Roc, Corinne Bailey Rae, Vel the Wonder, and Nathy Peluso, she seeks to write thoughtful and empowering lyrics, expressing the particularities of her identity, her pride for her cultural heritage, and her passion for poetry and rhythm.
Special thanks to Ms. Schnatterly's English classes for participating in the brainstorming sessions that lead to this year's theme, WORDQUAKE (suggested by Addy Fray).
Special thanks also to Mr. Simos and ETHS Graphic Arts Club members Sasha Van Den Berg and Jackson Hain for our Poetry Week 2023 poster and button designs.
