Summer Opportunities Programs Directory:

SMASH Program

http://www.lpfi.org/programs/smash/

Our program prepares students for college and careers in STEM by:

  • Hosting students to live and study at a university campus for 5 weeks, 3 summers at no cost to students.
  • Exposing students to the many careers in STEM that they can pursue and ways they can use STEM to advance their communities.
  • Expanding students’ peer and adult networks by immersing them in weekly networking nights, speaker series, field trips and a tight-knit community of peers.
  • Supporting students through high school, college applications, college and beyond.

Our mission is to diversify the field of STEM so we focus on students who are underrepresented in the field. We are looking for 9th graders who are:

  • High-achieving (there is no GPA requirement, but students who are earning A’s and B’s in their math and science classes will have a smoother transition to the SMASH curriculum)
  • Low-income (preferably eligible for Free/Reduced Lunch)
  • Identify as African American, LatinX, Native American, Southeast Asian (e.g. Cambodian, Laotian, Hmong, or Vietnamese) and/or Pacific Islander and Filipino students

As Bay Area residents, your 9th graders are eligible to apply to SMASH Stanford or SMASH UC Berkeley. Our program additionally runs out of UC Davis, UCLA, Morehouse College, Wayne State University, and the Wharton School of Business.

Our application will open on November 1st, 2018 at www.smash.org. The deadline to apply will be March 1st, 2019.

SUMMER 2018

July 8-August 4, 2018

*UCI closing date is August 3rd, 2018

ONLINE APPLICATIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE JANUARY 4, 2018 (11am pacific)

COSMOS is an intensive four-week summer residential program for students who have demonstrated an aptitude for academic and professional careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. Talented and motivated students completing grades 8-12 have the opportunity to work with renowned faculty, researchers and scientists in state-of-the-art facilities, while exploring advanced STEM topics far beyond the courses usually offered in California high schools. Through challenging curricula that are both hands-on and lab intensive, COSMOS fosters its students’ interests, skills, and awareness of educational and career options in STEM fields.

Students apply to one of the four University of California’s COSMOS campuses — UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz. While each campus employs the best practices in STEM education, the curriculum of each program builds on the unique teaching and research expertise of its faculty and host campus. Each campus can only accommodate about 160-200 participants, so selection is competitive. A typical COSMOS student has a GPA of 3.5 or above. Students must have achieved academic excellence.
