Description: Mandarin Chinese 1 is the
introduction course for learning one of the
world's most popular languages, as it
opens the doorway to communicate with
almost 1/5 of the planet's population! There
are no prerequisites and prior experience is
not required. Students will learn
vocabulary, proper sounds and tones, word
usage, sentence patterns, and basic
dialogues for real life situations. This
course also presents an introduction to the
culture and history of the Mandarin
speaking world. Students will be able to
engage in conversations and appropriate
responses in a culturally authentic way. By
the end of the course, students will be able
to, for example, invite a friend to a social
gathering by writing an invitation card in
Chinese. Come with curiosity, discover
with excitement, and start conversing with
confidence.
Description: Chinese 2 is the continuation
course of Chinese 1. The course starts with
reviewing the vocabulary and structures
students learned from Chinese 1 class.
Chinese 2 then continues to broaden
student’s vocabulary and structure
repertoire in various topics that are very
familiar to student’s lives. Students use the
vocabulary and structures as tools to make
functional communications in culturally
appropriate settings. By successfully
completing the course, students will be
able to (but not limited to), for instance,
arrange birthday parties, talk about daily
routines, and make phone calls in
Mandarin.
Description: Chinese 3 is the continuation
course of Chinese 2 as well as a course
that prepares students to be ready to take
the AP® Chinese Language and Culture
course next year. Students will be
introduced to topics that are familiar to
them as well as to the Chinese speaking
communities. By successfully completing
the course, students will be able to use
Mandarin to make meaningful
communications in culturally appropriate
settings on various different topics, such as
(but not limited to) travelling, traditional
festivals, Chinese characters and
calligraphy, Chinese dishes and clothing,
Chinese history and scientific
achievements, Chinese mythology,
performing arts, and literatures.
