Hi everyone,
Congratulations on another great year! I am grateful and proud of all of our collective work.
We have an exciting last week planned for our seniors and also are looking forward to closing out the school year with our other students who are completing their finals. Please see the finals schedule below:
Senior Fs should be imputed to IC already. All other grades for seniors and all grades for all other students should be submitted by the IC Grading Window deadline which is 6/5 at 5:00 PM. Gentle reminder that the closing of this IC grading window is monitored by district and site administration has no control over the opening or closing of the \grading windows.
I want to thank our counselors and pre-college programs for all their hard work this year! Our counselors organized many special events as well as held critical individual conferences with our students, participated in IEPs/504s, and general office hours.
The following information is the number of 1:1 meetings our 3 amazing counselors conducted this past year.:
Fall 2024
Seniors - 150
Juniors - 142
Sophomores - 100
Freshmen - 88
TOTAL: 507
Spring 2025
Seniors - 100
Juniors - 85
Sophomores - 89
Freshmen - 54
TOTAL: 328
These numbers don’t include all other contacts like participation in IEP, 504, and SST meetings.
The end of this year also marks the end of DCAC Michelle’s work with James Lick High School. We are grateful for all her efforts and support over the past three years. Please see some of the results of our joint efforts below. Please note that this is preliminary data and we are still collecting next steps for our seniors throughout this week. I’ll update you all when we have our finalized numbers and data.
Lastly, thank you to all of our staff and teachers for the great learning and teaching that happened every day. I snapped a few pics below to highlight some cool projects I saw recently. Thank you Mr. Singh, Mrs. Kawayoshi, and Mrs. Harrington!
Happy 3 Day Weekend!
Thank you all for such a special Honor Night this past week on 5/21/25. Truly grateful for all the work that went into preparing and enjoying the night!
Please be reminded that Senior F Day is May 28. The deadline to submit Fs for seniors will be at 4:00 PM PST on 5/28. We are asking that you use this Google Form to report those seniors who will be receiving Fs. Using the form allows us to keep this information organized and timestamped. Any Fs received after the deadline will not be valid and the student will receive a D-. This deadline also ensures that there is adequate time for counselors and I to contact students and families to discuss their graduation status.
I've talked to Jayme and she's agreed to input all the Senior Fs from our Google Form submissions so that teachers won't have to submit senior Fs twice on two different platforms. If one of your seniors is receiving an F, please prioritize inputting their F via the Google Form by the deadline (5/28).
Teachers will still need to input all other letter grades for their seniors into IC by the end of the grading window (6/5). Jayme will only input Senior Fs directly into IC. And as far as the other grades (9th-11th), all of their grades (regardless of letter grade) will be due 6/5 at 5:00 PM.
Thank you for your cooperation! Please also be prepared to turn in each semester gradebook at the end of the year. I’ll be in touch regarding all the EOY tasks for teachers this week.
Looking forward….
Our social workers will be hosting their last Wellness Fair for this 24-25 school year on 5/28 during lunch at the 500 Quad.
June 2-4- Finals
June 4- Graduation
*Mini Sessions- please reach out to Principal Gubuan with your proposal (quick form here). If you’re not able to host a mini session, please consider signing an agreement form for a colleague from your department to host your students and adjust their grades accordingly.
*End of Year Teacher Tasks- you will receive your EOY exit form the following week for you to complete.
Please see our Finals Schedule below:
As we prepare for the end of the school year, please communicate regularly with your students and parents, especially those with Ds and Fs and/or who are seniors. A phone call home directly from the teacher is so helpful. Counselors are in communication with those students who might not make it to graduation this year along with their parents and with other students who are struggling academically, but oftentimes students and parents ask for specific questions or support that only the teacher can provide. Thank you for your support in advance. Please view our flyer for other academic resources available:
Summer school promotion is happening! All students that need credit recovery will be invited with a letter this week, but please speak to your students about summer school and/or mini sessions to encourage them to participate. We will be doing the same!

An exciting new opportunity is available for our students next academic year! Students who might be interested in service oriented careers in their future including teaching would be a great fit for the Peer Tutor class. It is similar to the Student Aide role, but students play an active role in the learning environment. Please look at the flyer below and share with students who might be a good fit and reach out to me and their counselor so that we can schedule the Peer Tutor class in their schedule within the class you desire that support.

Hi JL staff,
A huge thank you to our staff for reaching the end of MP 5 and getting through CAASPP week! A special thank you to our proctors for supporting the testing process. We had about 40 students participate in our Make-Up day on Friday. We will have another Make-Up day for CAASPP on April 15 in Room 1007. I don’t have updated completion percentages today as the system has been down since Friday but I’ll be sure to share those out with you later this week.
English teachers and case managers, please remember to administer the DRP. The DRP is used in the reclassification process for EL students as well as a great indicator of a student's reading skills. Students need a 4 on the ELPAC and 35 or higher on the DRP to be reclassified. We will use these DRP scores this summer when new ELPAC results come in to reclassify students. The DRP assessment can be used for data on the present levels section of a student’s IEP.
It can be used to create reading comprehension goals around specific clusters of the ELA standards for Reading.
After the spring administration, scores from the fall and spring can be combined to show growth and progress.
Can provide information to Gen Ed teachers on possible needs for support and intervention on assignments requiring students to access texts.
The testing window has been extended until 5/2.
Upcoming events:
Please make sure you spread the word and invite parents of special education students to our parent night this Tuesday (4/15). Our SpEd department has been hard at work organizing for this great night!
There will be a Student/Parent Workshop about Financial Aid Award Packages on 4/15 at 4:30 PM led by our Cal-Soap team. They will also have a PIQ (Personal Insight Question) workshop on 4/17 during 3rd period for our students.
Our counselors will be meeting with our Juniors and other students this week for their 1:1s.
Our 8th grade parent night will be this Wednesday (April 16). Incoming freshmen and their families will be able to meet staff, learn more about clubs and athletics, as well as officially register for the 25-26 school year.
Other nights to look forward to:
5/21: Honor Night- Please see Noemi’s email regarding readers for scholarships!
Have an amazing week!
Happy end of 5th marking period! We did it! Grades will be due this Wednesday, April 9 by 5:00 PM. Calendar invites have been sent out as a gentle reminder.
It is also a busy week because it is state testing week for our Juniors and the administration of Sexual Education modules for our Seniors. Here is our finalized plan for CAASPP:
Juniors have received passes, Reminds, & emails to inform them of their testing locations and expectations. Seniors will be completing the sexual education modules in their classes this week during the same periods of testing. Those seniors who are displaced because of a teacher proctoring will be directed to another senior class.
If you’re not listed as a proctor for CAASPP or Sexual education or a runner, it means you have a mixed grade level class or majority freshmen/sophomore class and you will be with your regular class during that period and can continue with regular lessons.
Some other exciting events coming up in the rest of April:
Special Education Parent Night- 4/15 @ 5 PM
8th Grade Parent Night- 4/16 @ 6 PM
Continuing with our 1 on 1s with our students.
Here’s to a great week! Thanks in advance for all the teamwork.

April 2, 2025 is the Financial Aid Deadline (FAFSA). We are presently at 39% completed and our last Cash 4 College workshop will be tomorrow (April 1, 2025). We want to thank our counselors, Cal-SOAP partners, and our senior teachers for helping us get closer to our target!
Counselors will also be visiting senior English classes this Thursday to support our students with their personal insight questions- a critical component to their college application. Thank you English teachers for helping us reach our students.
April 16, 2025 is our 8th Grade Parent Night. Our team will be busy these next couple of weeks calling and inviting parents of our incoming freshmen to attend our 8th grade Parent night so that they can register their students to attend James Lick High School the following school year!

Lastly, we had 27 students participate in this year’s offering of the SAT. Our make-up SAT day will be on 3/24. We also have students who have expressed interest in taking the ACT and we will be working on supporting them.
I’ll be off campus from 3/12-3/14 at an off-campus PD and I look forward to sharing my learnings with you all when I return!

National SEL Week (March 3 - 8) starts on Monday!
Grades are due this Wednesday, February 26 at 5:00 PM. Thank you for submitting those grades by the deadline. Please let me know if you need any support or have questions.
This past winter break, I reviewed our students’ schedule requests and inputted those in IC. The counselors and I will continue to collect any missing schedule requests, work with our SpEd and ELD departments, and visit our middle schools to collect preferences and align student requests with their needs. We will be working diligently to ensure we have accurate data as we prepare for next year.
The SAT will be taking place on March 6, 2025 at our site. We have 32 juniors signed up to take the Digital SAT on 3/6/2025 for free. We are hosting a variety of study sessions to prepare students for the SAT. While juniors are the ones invited to take the test this March, all grades are welcomed for the study sessions. We will review best test-taking strategies as well as a review of concepts covered across the Reading/Writing and Math sections of the SAT. We will be having our last study session on 2/25.
Prior to winter break, the counseling team held their second SVCTE field trip! We have tough decisions to make as we have many interested students, but are allotted only 50 spots. We will be notifying those students who are selected this week and support them through the application process to SVCTE this week.
We only have 34 students out of 204 Seniors who have completed their Financial Aid Applications based on data prior to the February break. The deadline is March 3rd, 2025 and we need all hands on deck! As you speak with students, please let them know we are here to support.
We held a Financial Aid support session on February 18 with our Cal-SOAP partners and had 15 students attend. We will also be visiting various history courses this week to provide 1:1 support. Lastly, our next Cash for College event will be on March 12. Thank you for any support and encouragement you can offer our students.

Our counseling intern and I plus three of our star students visited Sheppard Middle School this past Friday to promote James Lick and have students fill out schedule request forms. It was a wonderful event and our students rocked it. They spoke of their experiences in our classes, athletics, clubs, academic programs, pathways, and one of our students even brought her beautiful artwork. We have plans to visit Renaissance and Joseph George, as well. We are also looking to visit some of our other smaller feeder schools to try to also encourage students to attend JLHS!
Our SAT sign-ups closed on January 27. We have 32 students signed up to take the Digital SAT on 3/6/2025 for free. We are hosting a variety of study sessions to prepare students for the SAT. General Education Teachers, please remember that the attendance of a General Education Teacher at an IEP meeting is a legal requirement that Special Education teachers and IEP teams must comply with. Please respond to the Google Calendar invites that our Special Education Teachers send as well as their requests for students’ present levels.

Remember that Grades are Due this Thursday (January 9) at 5:00 PM. Please input grades for any students who might have been dropped due to the semester change, but that spent the majority of the semester in your class and earned a grade.
We will not be doing any schedule changes other than those required by 504s, IEPs, urgent graduation requirements, or safety concerns. Thank you for your help in communicating this with our students. We have also communicated this same message to them.

The Grading Window on Infinite Campus will open this Wednesday (12/18) at 6:00 AM and will close after the winter break on Thursday (1/9/2025) at 5:00 PM. I will create reminder Google Calendar invites.
Counselors and I are working hard to address any potential concerns about credits with our seniors, so posting grades as soon as possible would be most appreciated.
Please note that the Learning Center (TLC) will be open if you have any students that need a quiet space to complete finals or have accommodations that require a separate setting for testing. Please reach out via a phone call, text, or email and we will be happy to support your student.
Teachers, we are working on personalized flyers to promote A-G requirements and college & career awareness. Please fill out this quick Google Form here by the end of this week.
A gentle reminder to you all of a resource that is new to us this year: ELLevation. It is available via ARMS.ESUHSD.ORG.
Here’s a strategy to support English Language Learners:
Welcome back, Comets, and Happy December! I hope you had a beautiful Thanksgiving break.
The CSU and UC Application Deadline is Tomorrow (December 2)! Our counseling team and seniors have worked very hard to turn in college applications. Please reach out to the team if you have any students to send our way who need last minute support for their applications. I’ll report back on how many students submitted their applications to one or both of these institutions next week.
This upcoming week, the counselors will be meeting with students who missed their initial 1:1 meetings. They will be working closely with advisors for those students who have attendance issues. It’s also that time already when the counseling team will start to prepare for the following 25-26 school year. We will begin to build our course request process as we meet with each of the departments throughout December. Stay tuned!
As we prepare for finals, please take a look at and share the Academic Resources flyer. You all have received copies of this flyer in your mailbox to post in your classrooms. The Teacher Office Hours QR code links to a spreadsheet with all of our teacher-led academic tutoring programs offered via Assets. If you host office/tutoring hours outside of Assets and would like for me to add your name and information, please let me know.
I also want to thank everyone for all of the thoughtful conversations around how to support English Language Learners. Over Thanksgiving break, I worked on a data report on the spread of our English Language Learners across all of our classes (how many ELL students are in each class each period). Stay tuned for some action items coming your way to support our staff and students based on feedback and ideas from staff. In the meantime, I wanted to also remind you all of a resource that is new to us this year: ELLevation. It is available via ARMS.ESUHSD.ORG.
It offers a variety of modules to explore how to support English Language Learners. See below for a snapshot of these opportunities:
Hi JL team,
College Application Season is here and our Finals Season is approaching!
Counselors and our pre-college programs are offering special opportunities for students to receive support with their college applications. Please encourage seniors to stop by the *new* College and Career Center in Room 308 during the following dates and times:
Tuesday (11/19) from 3:30- 4:45 PM
Wednesday (11/20) from 3:30 - 4:45 PM
Thursday (11/21) from 3:30-4:45 PM
Thanksgiving Break: (11/25) from 9 AM - 2 PM
UC Berkeley’s DCAC/EAOP, in partnership with CalSoap, 10,000 Degrees, and EVC Trio, will host a College Application Crunch Event at Overfelt High School. If you have seniors interested in participating in this event please have them fill out this Google Form: rmd.me/mdarVHyX78o
Counselors will also be continuing their 1-on-1 meetings with our 11th grade students this week. Thank you for your understanding.
I am continuing to edit an Academic Resources 1 pager that will be distributed to all students and teachers by the end of this week. Please reach out to me if you host office hours before, after, or during school hours (lunch/break). I have information on those teachers who offer academic support through Assets, but I know many of you also have office hours independent of Assets. I’d like to include you on this spreadsheet. Please let me know what subject, times, and days you offer academic support, so that students can take advantage of these opportunities as we approach finals.
Lastly, we have 70 seniors who are reaching A-G requirements, thus far. Thanks for all you do to support our students.
Hello James Lick!
Thank you to all of our teachers for turning in your grades on time! A big shout-out to you all. And a big thank you to our registrar Jayme for supporting this process! We had 100% of our teachers turn in their grades on time and only had to follow up with a few teachers regarding a couple accidentally missed students! A team of us will be looking through the Early Warning Signs (EWS) once it is released for MP 2 to help us direct and implement resources and interventions.
MP 3 is in full swing and ends December 20. Please share the following resources with our students as they work on their assignments:
Counselors will be completing their 11th grade 1-on-1s this week, meeting with every Junior. Each Junior will receive a pass sometime this week with the date and time of their counseling meeting. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility as our 11th grade students participate in this opportunity.
On 11/13, there will be a College Application workshop for seniors at 3:30 PM in Room 308, the College and Career Center.
Enjoy the long weekend and thank you to our staff who are veterans!
Happy Sunday!
This is a friendly reminder that the Grading Window for Marking Period 2 is OPEN. Grades are due this Wednesday, November 6 at 5:00 PM. Thank you for planning accordingly.
For Canvas users who have set up the gradebook passback (Grade Sync) to Infinite Campus, be sure to run a sync
(Grades>Actions>Sync to SIS) before you Post grades in the Campus Gradebook. Posting grades will move the
In-Progress Grades to the Post Grades page in Campus Instruction.
Campus Gradebook requires the following to be set up for each section (see instructions):
Categories - At least 1, may set up weighting
Grading Scale - use the District's or create your own
Grade Calculation Options - set up In-Progress Grades for the Semester Grading Tasks only, select your Grading Scales, and apply Weighting if used.
See instructions on how to Multi-Post Grades in Infinite Campus.
Teachers should then check their posted grades in Campus Instruction>Post Grades. This is where you can make adjustments
to the grade and assign Comments as well. To use the District's canned comments, be sure the preference is turned on in
User Profile Menu>Account Settings>Preferences>Use Canned Comments (check the box).
WASC Visit
I will be off campus and out of the office this week from November 4-6 as I will be participating in a WASC visit as a Visiting Committee Member in Antelope, California. I look forward to learning about another school and reflecting on our own practices here at JL as well as learning about any updates to the WASC process that can better prepare us for our own WASC visit.
11th Grade Presentations
Thank you to our academic counselors and our teachers for leading and participating in our 11th grade counseling presentations. Please see the schedule below.
Shout-out to The Academic Counseling Team! They held the CAL-POLY SAN LUIS OBISPO COLLEGE WORKSHOP on 10/31 during 5th period. We had a total of 25 students attend!
Sophomore 1:1 Meetings: Counselors will be meeting with every Sophomore this upcoming week for their 1:1 meetings. Thank you for your understanding and releasing your student at the time noted on their pass.
Higher Ed Feedback: The TLC Team wants to give a huge thanks to you all for helping support our first Higher Ed Day of the 24-25 School Year. I am also so grateful for everyone's leadership that made this event happen.
A few of us met right after our Higher Ed Day event to debrief. We already recognize some changes we want to make for the Spring Higher Ed Day including bilingual or translated presentations and more representation from Trade/Union Organizations. However, we still want to get your feedback on how the day went whether you attended sessions with your 11th/12th grade students or led the 9th/10th grade College Exploration lesson.
Please fill out the Feedback Form here and Save the Date for our next Higher Ed Day on March 18, 2025.
10th Grade Counseling Presentations: Thank you to our Counselors for sharing critical information this week to our Sophomores and thank you to our teachers for visiting the TLC with your class so that they may receive this information.
TLC Space Update: Our Pre-College programs are now located in 308. Please stay tuned next week for some staff updates as we have had new members join us with these programs. Our TLC is now a dedicated space for counseling work, our library, and student studying. It will be maintained as a quiet, no food/drink, and strictly studying/reading zone based on the collective feedback of our TLC members.. If you ever have a student who needs to take a test or work on an assignment and is in need of a quiet space, please reach out to us.

As you are reaching out to counselors regarding various concerns, please use the jl-counseling@esuhsd.org email. There are many overlapping efforts; therefore, using the group email allows us to process your concern efficiently and accurately.
This Tuesday (10/22) is Higher Ed Day! We are so excited to present to you Higher Ed Day Fall 2024. We will be on Activity Schedule this day.
*Our Counselors will be dropping by classes on Monday to deliver the handouts with information on the sessions to 11th and 12th grade students.
*Please view the Higher Ed Document here that has all the information for this day.
*While lunch ends at 1:40 PM, 5th period teachers can bring their 5th period classes to the College Fair.
Special Education Department Reminder: Please view the General Education Teacher Rotation for IEP meetings. A gentle reminder that we are prioritizing the general education teachers students have a class with, so you might sub for that teacher so that they may attend the IEP if it is your turn on the rotation. However, there might be IEPs in which you will be invited to for a student that is not in your class. This can be for various reasons: some students might not have any General Education teachers or any classes with us, for instance, if they’re in home/hospital or other specialized programs. We thank you for your understanding and for attending IEPs; it is a legal requirement to have a General Education teacher be a part of the IEP team. Please accept the Google Calendar invites that you are invited to so that the special education teacher knows you are aware of the IEP and will attend.
Field Trip Opportunity: We are looking for a chaperone for a Field Trip on 11/2 to SJSU. Please let me know if you are interested in attending.
Comet Academy & Pathway to Success (Schedule Changes and Updates): This week we began placing our students in support classes based on the results of the Early Warning System and conversations with these students. Throughout the past three weeks, Rick Gonzalez, Joel, Honey, and I identified around 55 9th grade students that are in need of support based on their grades, behavior, attendance and teacher feedback from Marking Period 1. From this list, Rick and I spoke to many students about their progress, analyzed data, and identified 12 students that would have their schedule changed to be placed in the 1st period Pathway to Success class with Mr. Gonzalez. We will be monitoring progress. This week, we will be finalizing schedule changes for 10th and 11th graders that are chronically truant and in need of credit recovery. They will be placed in Comet Academy in either 2nd, 3rd, or 6th period for support.
A big thank you to our pre-college programs, Noemi, and Ruby for our Financial Aid Night on 10/2. We had over 40 parents attend a Spanish or English presentation on important facts and steps to navigate financial aid for College.
Higher Ed Day [Activity Schedule on 10/22]: We are so excited for this semester’s Higher Ed Day on 10/22. We will be having a wonderful selection of sessions for our juniors and seniors. We will be on Activity Schedule. Freshmen and Sophomores will remain with their 4th period teacher and engage in a College Exploration Activity with their teacher. We will be in touch with the lesson plan!
EWS
Thank you to all of our teachers for turning in grades! This past week, we were able to start reviewing our students' grades and progress. We use a report called Early Warning Signs (EWS) to help us focus our support, interventions, and next steps. The EWS shows us a list of students who need additional support based on failing or receiving a D in one or more courses this past MP1, attendance issues, and/or receiving behavioral referrals.
We are coordinating with our teachers who are intervention teachers to add additional students to their courses that might need the academic and social-emotional support based on the above findings. We will continue to explore trends and identify additional supports our students need.
Save the Dates
We have a wonderful jam-packed October coming up. It is College Awareness Month! We will have tabling on Fridays from our pre-college programs and other events. Please see below:
We will be in touch soon with additional information!
Our counselors delivered presentations to our Freshmen this past week. They included one of our chosen New Tech strategies: Knows and Need-to-Knows.
I want to thank our English, ELD, and Special Education teachers that supported the DRP testing process. I appreciate all the team work and organization to get this mandatory testing completed. The DRP is a reading test that can be a great baseline to understand our students’ strengths and areas of growth and it can be used to redesignate English Language Learners.

Have a wonderful week!
Hi JL team,
Thank you to all of our educators for your efforts in supporting our students in the classroom and out of the classroom this past marking period! Thank you to our teachers for turning in grades for MP1 and a special thank you to our registrar Jayme for supporting this process! A team of us will be reviewing grades from MP1 and organizing support for those students who might need extra guidance and interventions. I look forward to sharing the data we analyze soon. If there are freshmen that need support, please refer to Rick Gonzalez’s Google Form here for them to be considered for a support class.
Our counselor Veronica Martinez has returned! We are so excited to welcome her back. Please see our updated counselor caseload below:

Our counseling team concluded the senior 1:1s last week will now be delivering 9th grade presentations this week.
Lastly, if you find yourself in need of a student aide, please let us know here.
I want to thank Mark Zabala for representing James Lick as an IPC member! If you are interested in serving as an alternate on the Instructional Policies Committee, please email me. IPC is charged with overseeing, discussing, and recommending action for changes in courses, as well, piloting of new courses, and permanent adoption of courses. It’s a great way to be a part of the instructional moves we make as a district and collaborate with others across the district. We meet one Wednesday a month via Zoom.
The End of the First Grading Period was Friday, 9/13/2024.
Infinite Campus Grading Window
Opened: 6:00 AM, Wednesday, September 11, 2024
Closes: 5:00 PM, Wednesday, September 18, 2024
Please ensure that you don't post grades for those students who have dropped from your courses. Please turn in grades before the deadline.
I want to thank the Special Education Department for a wonderful and productive SpEd pull-out professional development day last week on 9/10/2024. During this day, we talked about best practices and organized for the school year. Please see the general education teacher rotation here and thank you for understanding that we will be prioritizing teachers who are the teacher of record for that student and you might be asked to sub a class for a teacher of record instead of attending an IEP. Each teacher should now have all students’ IEPs at a Glance via IC. These IEPs at a Glance contain important information regarding the disability of the student and the accommodations that student is legally required to receive. All special education teachers will be asking for the mandatory teacher feedback using this form:
I visited Ms. Roussel’s class during a lab day last week. Check out the Cornell guided notes that students use to follow the lesson. Students were also drawing, writing, and discussing key vocabulary while looking at tissue under a microscope. Reach out to Ms. Roussel for a template should you be interested!
I want to thank folks for reaching out to inquire about ELD support. I want to assure you that we are also communicating with the district about this need for support. We will be using a tool called ELLevation that contains important data regarding students and modules with strategies to support our students. Stay tuned! Check out ELD resources here. Please let me know if you’d like a personal visit from our ELD district TOSA.
Please let us know if you are interested in being paired with a Student Aide here.
Please email me if you’d like to join IPC. We are still in need of an alternate. This is a district committee that meets once a month to discuss new courses and instruction.
Our students in need of credit recovery will now begin working on those courses via Edgenuity. Edgenuity replaced Cyber High. Thank you Ms. Jaspal and Ms. Cabigas for being our Edgenuity teachers!
Hi JL family,
Congratulations! We will be concluding the first six weeks of the school year this week. The grading period ends on Friday, September 13, 2024. The Infinite Campus grading window opens on 9/11/2024 and closes on 9/18/2024. Please see below.
Our counseling team will continue to not make any schedule changes unless they are related to a safety concern, a graduation requirement, or IEP/504 services. Please let us know if there are any concerns with your classes and as always, thank you for your patience as we work as a team of three instead of four.
Please let us know if you are interested in being paired with a Student Aide here.
Please see this attachment for Canvas directions in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Feel free to share with your parents that you are in contact with. Thank you for Ms. Roussel for asking about these instructions in multiple languages!
Our counselors have been busy working with our students and their families. Please see below the upcoming presentations and 1-on-1 conversations our counselors will be leading.
Hi Comet family,
Happy September!
We have reached that 17th day of the school year, and, at last, balancing has been completed. We will continue to revisit our student distribution to ensure that we are in compliance and that students are distributed evenly across courses throughout the year. Please reach out if there are any concerns.
Head Counselor Huitron, ELD Lead Ramirez, and I met with our district ELD TOSA Jose Solis last week to discuss placement of ELD (multilingual) students as well as strategies. We did move some ELD 1 students based on district guidelines and student voice. Please stay tuned for professional development and support that will be coming our way and please reach out at this time if you would like Jose to visit specific classes of yours to provide direct feedback.
Thank you to our Econ/Gov students and teachers who participated in our Senior Presentations last week. And thank you to our counselors Noemi and Ruby and counseling intern Jenny for kicking off this year’s presentations. We will be concluding senior presentations this week as well as begin our senior 1 on 1 check-ins. Thank you for your flexibility and cooperation!
Please let us know if you are interested in being paired with a Student Aide here.

Finally, a gentle reminder that we are down one counselor at this time. Thank you for your patience as we return emails and address student and teacher concerns.
A big thank you to the Wellness Center for their first 500 Quad Wellness Takeover Day!
Hello Comets!
Thank you again for your patience as we balance classes and continue to work on finalizing this process this week. This past week, the Counseling team tackled the following opening and closing of sections as well as balancing of sections after receiving the Class Size Committee’s directives on the evening of 8/19:
Opened Chemistry (6th Period) - Ms. Kawayoshi
Opened Genres of Composition (4th Period) - Mr. Adams
Opened PE 2 (4th Period) - Incoming Staff Member
Opened Math 1 (2nd Period) - Mr. Rosiles
Closed Biology (6th Period) - Ms. Roussel
Closed English 1 (4th Period) - Mr. Adams
Closed Math 3 (2nd Period) - Mr. Rosiles
Other changes and notes
Numbers stabilized enough in Physics that we didn’t open another section
Numbers stabilized enough in Pre-Calculus that we didn’t open another section
Shifted Mr. Iniguez’s 4th Period Pathways/180 Program to 3rd Period due to staffing need of incoming PE teacher
6th period Physiology with Ms. Kawayoshi is now with Ms. Roussel
Thank you to all these teachers mentioned above for their flexibility and for stepping up to meet our student needs. We recognize that some classes are still in the process of being balanced due to certain constraints and we will resolve these issues this week to the best of our ability within the parameters of the master schedule.
While we wrap up balancing, we will also be concluding schedule change requests not related to errors or placement. Our counseling team completed and closed out 114 requests last week and there remains to be about 80 to resolve this week. However, most of these requests do not meet the threshold of the validity of a schedule change request or we had to wait until balancing to assess if we could honor the request.. We will be in contact with each of these students to inform them of the status and result of their schedule change request.
Please let us know if you are interested in being paired with a Student Aide here.
As you speak to parents of students with IEPs, please remind them of our first of three Parent Night for Diverse learners where they will be able to meet with their student’s case manager and plan for the upcoming year.
Thank you all and looking forward to a great week,
Carla
Hi JL fam,
First and foremost, thank you so much for your patience this last week regarding scheduling as we receive schedule change requests from students and teachers and await to hear a formal recommendation from the Class Size Committee by 8/19. We expect balancing and appropriate schedule change requests to take place and be finalized early this week. Thank you for welcoming any new students you may have!
If students are interested in a Schedule Change, please have them submit their request via our Google Form. The deadline to do so is tomorrow (8/19) at 3:30 PM. We will close the form at that time and only accommodate schedule changes that impact safety and/or are due to an IEP update or test placement.
Last week, we focused on enrolled students who have not been attending JL in order to balance as accurately as possible. We have identified many of these freshmen and contacted their families to verify where they are enrolled. Jayme has also been in contact with the district and receives reports of students who have been enrolled elsewhere. There is still a small number of freshmen (about 11) that we are in the process of doing a home visit to get this information and complete our outreach duty. We also are not able to No-Show students within special populations (like those with IEPs or who are MV) without some additional steps. Please reach out to me or Mr. Boostani if you notice a student has not been attending any of their classes and is still on your roster.
The DRP (Degrees of Reading Power) reading assessment will begin to be administered to many of our students across English classes. A big thank you to our English department as they administer the DRP that is a helpful tool in the reclassification process of our English Language Learners and the understanding of our students’ academic needs and strengths. Please reach out to me if you would like more information on this tool. The testing window closes on 9/27, so we should have this important data of our students by then.
Thanks y’all,
Carla
Hi JL Family,
Thank you to you all for your patience as many of us transition into new roles this school year. I am so excited to work with you all and with the JL TLC Team as APED! This first week was amazing and I’m truly pumped at the idea of what we can accomplish this year together!
Chromebooks: All students should have chromebooks at this time. If they are in need of a chromebook or hotspot, please have them visit Ms. Ortiz in the TLC during break or lunch.
Classroom Books are available in the bookroom. Please sign up here for an appointment with Ms. Ortiz in our bookroom.
Library: The library has been moved to room 308. Our librarian Thoai Truong (truongt@esuhsd.org) has a wonderful vision to recreate the library experience at JL. He’ll be in touch soon with more details.
Schedule Changes: A gentle reminder to have students remain in the classes listed on their current schedule until a new schedule is provided if they’ve requested a change or if they’ve contacted their counselor about a scheduling error. JL Support Staff will be working diligently this week and next to contact families whose students have not been attending our school, so it is critical that our attendance data is the most accurate. This number will affect our balancing efforts. Our academic counselors will begin processing schedule change requests after this week. However, if there is an error on a schedule regarding placement or IEP compliance, please reach out to me and to the corresponding academic counselor via email as we will prioritize these changes.
