In order to train the next generation, the Chair participates in the organisation of an innovative doctoral seminar, bringing together doctoral students in management and social sciences working on social entrepreneurship, philanthropy, or the intersection of the two themes. The SEPHI seminar is co-organised with our colleagues from HEC Liège and EM Lyon business school.

After two editions organised at ESSEC Business School, the third edition was held online due to the pandemic.

In 2023, the fourth edition will take place in Lyon and will be hosted by EM Lyon. The call for applications is open. Further details below.

6-7 May 2021 - 3rd edition


16 PhD students from13 different universities (University of Auckland, University of Calgary, EMLyon Business School, University of Edinburgh, KU Leven, Maastricht University, Wharton School, University of Michigan, Hertie School, Erasmus University Rotterdam, HEC Liège, VU Brussels, and University of Neuchatel) presented their thesis work and received some feedback.

They also had the chance to discuss with professors Danielle Logue and Johanna Mair.

The event should have been hosted by HEC Liège, but due to the pandemic, it was held online.

SEPHI 2021

15-17 July 2018 - 2nd edition

12 PhD students from 10 different universities (Politecnico di Milano, HEC Liège, Ben Gurion University, Linköping University, Indiana University - Purdue University, Nova School of Business, and Economics, ESSEC Business School, Deusto Business School, Université Libre de Bruxelles, University of Hamburg) presented their thesis work and received feedback.


Two experienced professors were invited to share their work with the PhD students: Alnoor Ebrahim (Tufts University) and Filipe Santos (Católica-Lisbon School of Business & Economics).


11 December 2015 (ESSEC) & 23 February 2016 (HEC Liège) - 1st edition

11 PhD students from 9 different universities (University of Liège, IAE Aix-Marseille, ESSEC Business School, University of Oxford, Université catholique de Louvain, Uppsala University, Université libre de Bruxelles, University of Basel, Universidad de Santiago de Chile) presented their thesis work and received feedback. Four experienced professors were invited to share their work with the PhD students:

    • Anne-Claire Pache (ESSEC Business School)

    • Kai Hockerts (Copenhagen Business School)

    • Georg von Schnurbein (University of Basel)
