About HDDA-XIII

In recent times, data analysis has been undergoing a profound transformation due to the rapid expansion of datasets and the proliferation of data sources. From social media networks to public health, bioinformatics to personalized medicine, environmental studies to nanoscience, and even financial analysis, diverse domains are facing new challenges. This surge has not only been confined to academic research; rather, it has permeated the practical spheres of businesses and governmental entities. As a response to this evolving landscape, there is an imperative to craft novel algorithms that can effectively scale with the dimensions of these datasets. In parallel, the development of new theoretical tools is essential to comprehend the statistical properties inherent to these algorithms. Promising breakthroughs in this realm encompass techniques such as variable selection, penalized methods, and variational inference, marking the frontier of advancements in data analysis and interpretation.

Since its inception in 2011 at the Fields Institute in Toronto, HDDA gathers leading researchers in the area of high-dimensional statistics and data analysis. The objectives include: (1) to highlight and expand the breadth of existing methods in high-dimensional data analysis and their potential for the advance of both mathematical and statistical sciences, (2) to identify important directions for future research in the theory of regularization methods and variational inference, in algorithmic development, and in methodology for different application areas, facilitate collaboration between theoretical and subject-area researchers (econometrics, finance, social science, biostatistics…), and (3) to provide opportunities for highly qualified personnel to meet and interact with leading researchers in the area.

Past editions of HDDA

The Workshop on High Dimensional Data Analysis (HDDA) was first introduced by Professor Ejaz Ahmed in Canada 2011. It became a recurring event. In 2022 and 2023, the workshop was held jointly with the Journées d’Économétrie de la Finance (JEF, Days of Econometrics for Finance). The full list of HDDA workshops is as follows:

Location and logistics

Transportation:

Public transportation is reliable, and cheap (MRT: underground train, and bus). You can pay simply by tapping your debit/credit card (only works with VISA or Mastercard). Alternatively, you can buy an EZ-link card in any MRT station.

Taxis are also relatively cheap. You can easily find a taxi at the airport, the trip to ESSEC is usually not more than 30-35 SGD. However, there are not so many taxi stations in the city, because Singaporean use apps like Grab or Gojek instead (Uber does not opperate in Singapore). If you want to use taxis, we recommend you to buy a cheap sim-card for short-term visitors at the airport, and to install one of these apps.

Conference location:

ESSEC Business School is conveniently located near the campus of the National University of Singapore, near the MRT stations "One North" (yellow line, 2 min walk from campus) and "Buona Vista" (green and yellow line, 10 min).

The address is: ESSEC Business School, 5 Nepal Park, Singapore 139408. You can find more information on the campus and nearby public transportation on the school website.

Hotels:
The following hotels have preferential rates for events organized at ESSEC. Please mention that you attend an event at ESSEC to benefit from these preferential rates:

1) walking distance from the campus:
Park Avenue Rochester
Citadines Rochester Connect
Citadines Science Park
Lyf One North

2) near the Botanic Gardens:
RELC International Hotel

3) near Orchard Road:
Orchard Rendezvous Hotel

Food:
Lunch and coffee breaks are included in the registration.

For dinner, there are a few restaurants and coffee shops in Fusionopolis (2 min, near the One North MRT station), but some of them might be closed in the evening. There are more restaurants in the Star Vista mall (10 min walk from the campus, near Buona Vista station) that remain open in the evening. In both cases, some restaurants are more expensive than others, but both shopping centers have food courts in the basement where it is possible to get good and very cheap food!

The area around the MRT station "Holland Village" (1 stop from Buona Vista on the yellow line) is also quite popular with many restaurants, food courts and bars. Ideal for drinks in the evening.

What to do in Singapore:

If you take some time off before or after the workshop, there are many things to do in Singapore. Some of the most popular places are actually easy to reach from ESSEC:
