When this educational institution became known as Domingos Rebêlo Secondary School, several initiatives were carried out to promote and value the figure of its patron. Exhibitions, monographs, publications, creative works, visits to the Carlos Machado Museum and conferences were made. At that time the Documentary Center on Domingos Rebêlo was promoted, the Centenary of the painter's birth was celebrated in 1991, a commemorative panel related to his pictorial work was created, with the collaboration of the Academy of Arts of Ponta Delgada, as it is possible to see in the entrance hall of the School.
In 2014, a team of teachers elaborated the NIDDORE project (Interactive and Digital Centre Domingos Rebêlo) , located in the old library of the school, which had the support of the Regional Government of the Azores. Teachers have taken responsibility for research, writing and design of digital resources.
The section of NIDDORE dedicated to the Painter includes photographic records of works provided by national and regional museums and by individuals, which are important to have a comprehensive perspective of the Master's work. The collaboration of all of them, as well as the family, in particular of Jorge Rebêlo, deserves our greatest gratitude.
In this space, visitors will have access to a chronological frieze about the life and work of Domingos Rebêlo and will be able to learn about the thematic variety conceived by the Master, through eight digital frames that combine images and texts. In addition, a wide range of resources with different information about the artist and his experiential circumstances will be available to the visitors.
By the way, it is important to read in NIDDORE the text that the sculptor José Maria França Machado wrote for the opening of this Centre, entitled "The evocation of a painter". Quoting an excerpt from this magnificent text: "... But Domingos Rebêlo was sensible and intelligent, he got along with different artists and he was very well aware of what was happening around him. When he could, he painted masterpieces going against what he was taught in the art academies."
