In our SIEI (Intensive Support for Inclusive Schooling) classroom, known as "The Fish Tank", we believe that diversity is a wealth. Just as very different fish live together in the sea, at school each child is unique and special. That is why our mascot is a crab, an animal that represents adaptability and strength, and we have turned it into a resource to help children regulate their emotions.
Our stuffed animal is called Suau (Soft), not only because it has a pleasant and comforting texture, but because "soft" is an easy word to pronounce for children with ASD in early childhood education. This detail favors their communication and identification with the resource.
Currently, Suau is helping children in Infant 4 and Infant 5 to self-regulate in moments of anxiety or nervousness. When it detects soft movements, it becomes happy, helping them to return to calm. To introduce it into their routine, we are working with pictograms and direct contact with the stuffed animal, so that they understand how and when they can use it.
With this project, we are not only fostering their emotional autonomy, we are also making our classroom a more inclusive and welcoming space for everyone. Suau is now part of our daily life at The Fish Tank!
