In this educational project, we present three innovative applications of the micro:bit board designed to support children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in their emotional and sensory development. Both tools seek to create an inclusive environment that fosters self-regulation, well-being and the integration of technology in education.
The micro:bit-based sound level meter is a tool that allows you to measure and visualise noise levels in your child's environment, helping to create quieter and more controlled spaces.
How does it work?
The micro:bit, equipped with a microphone, measures the noise level in the environment. Depending on the intensity detected:
If the noise level is low or acceptable, the micro:bit's LEDs display a positive icon.
If the noise level exceeds a certain threshold, a warning pictogram in the form of headphones appears, and the student knows to put on the sound-cancelling headphones.
Purpose of the sound level meter:
Help children and adults identify environments that may be too noisy or stressful for the child with ASD, allowing decisions to be made to mitigate adverse sensory stimuli.
Key benefits:
Supports the child's well-being in noisy environments.
Increases caregivers' and educators' awareness of the importance of a controlled sensory environment.
Promotes the development of environmental self-regulation skills.
This micro:bit-equipped plush toy is designed to help children identify and manage their emotions using visual stimuli.
How does it work?
The plush toy detects the child's movements thanks to the motion sensors built into the micro:bit and its AI programming.
If the child makes gentle, calm movements, the micro:bit displays a smiley face pictogram with LEDs.
If the child makes sudden or jerky movements, a sad face is displayed.
Purpose of the plush toy:
To promote emotional awareness and behavioural control, reinforcing positive behaviours through the use of immediate visual feedback.
Key benefits:
Promotes emotional self-regulation in stressful situations.
Facilitates understanding of cause and effect, an essential skill for children with ASD.
Serves as a playful and motivating tool in therapeutic and educational settings.
These projects highlight how technology, when tailored to individual needs, can transform the learning and well-being of children with ASD. From emotional regulation through the interactive stuffed animal to creating sensory-safe spaces with the sound meter, the micro:bit becomes a powerful inclusive tool.
