*The Notepad tool is a "Global Tool" located at the top of the testing platform. The same notepad and the text withing the notepad will be accessible throughout the entire test. However, the Sticky Note tool is a "Context Menu Tool" that can be found beside each set of questions and answers. The text within the "Sticky Note" is only available for that particular question. Students will have a new "Sticky Note" for each question.

Real Sticky Notes/Written Notes
Teach students annotation skills with real sticky notes or have them write notes beside text in books/passages.
THE SKILL IS STILL THE SAME!
Teach students to use actual sticky notes throughout the year. Later in the year practice transferring those same skills to the STAAR online practice platform. This allows students to become familiar with how to use sticky notes for annotation so that the cognitive load is removed on test day.
Book Snaps
"A book snap is a digital visual representation of the text along with the annotation." (Tara Martin)
Book snaps can be used to:
Annotate and share excerpts of a book.
Allow the reader to connect an idea or thought by creating a digital visual representation
Solidify the text content within the mind and signal the brain to retrieve the idea from memory
Highlight figurative language and imagery
Note character conflict and internal struggles
Personally connect to the text
Point out the main idea or a supporting argument
Practice in Google Slides
Set the background with an image of text and allow two students to collaborate on one Jamboard with highlighters. Students can practice typing a note on their sticky note about why they highlighted the text or what they might need to remember about the text.
Google Keep
Students can also take notes from video or text using Google Keep in a Google Slide or Doc. This video by Henderson ISD Instructional Technology provides a demonstration of how this can be done.
