Becoming an Interactive Reader

Blended Learning

Presenter: Andy Adams, M.Ed.

Blended Learning. Flipped Classroom. Asynchronous Learning. What do they all mean? Why should it be considered for students? How is it done? With so many questions about this topic, this session provides resources and insight to provide answers. If your students have access to devices (1:1, shared cart, computer lab, cell phones), you have what's needed to deploy blended learning and maximize student learning.

Creating a Climate for Thinking and Writing

Presenter: Paul Eyler, M.Ed.

Before we can expect our students to tackle authentic writing tasks in the classroom, we must create a climate for thinking. This includes encouraging our students to think creatively, be persistent, listen with understanding, be metacognitive, and approach learning with curiosity. This session will explore many of these habits of mind, how to foster their growth in students and how to teach students to use them simply and effectively in the writing process.

How to Create High Quality Assessments

Presenter: James Slaughter, B.S.

Creating assessments to determine student understanding is a complicated task teachers face. Are my assessments okay or are they high quality? Teachers will explore four types of assessments and learn ways to make each type of assessment more effective.

Improving Classroom Discussions

Presenters: James Slaughter, B.S. & Dee Jordan, M.Ed.

Student discussions are important components of classroom instruction that work to push learning forward and move students from passive participants to active meaning-makers. Learn strategies and activities that shift the roles of teachers and students, to better stimulate, sustain, and support student thinking.

Language and Vocabulary Growth for All

Presenter: Carmen Delgado, M.Ed.

Language and vocabulary growth aren’t just for ESL. All students are ongoing language learners. Students have a greater chance of mastering language goals and academic vocabulary when they are given multiple opportunities to practice in relevant, meaningful ways. This session will explore collaborative strategies for purposeful ways to practice incorporating the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Presenter: Jane Tarr, M.Ed.

Do you have students that have a hard time with problem-solving? Many teachers express "my students have a hard time thinking"! Let’s explore some ways to empower students to be more independent and take a more active role in their learning process. Let’s encourage students to think!

Supplemental Aids: Creating Paper-Based Supports that Students Can and Will Use

Presenter: Stacey Perkins, M.A.

Supplemental aids are powerful learning tools because they visually represent connections among key facts and concepts. This session explores how graphic organizers, timelines, and number charts can facilitate comprehension and retention of new learning for all students, especially struggling learners. Eligibility criteria for use on state assessments will be addressed.

Understanding Differentiated Instruction

Presenter: James Slaughter, B.S.

Not all students learn the same way. Not all students are at the same level of development. Differentiated instruction means tailoring instruction to meet individual needs. How do you differentiate? This workshop will provide teachers many resources and activities for immediate implementation in the classroom to help differentiate content, process, and products for students.
