Step 2 | Establish a multidisciplinary SSSP Team
Designate the team as the Safe and Supportive School Program Team
Identify team members. Superintendent is responsible for being sure that multidisciplinary team is represented to the greatest extent possible. Examples could be:
Counseling
behavior management
mental health/substance use
classroom instruction
special education
school adminstratiion
emergency mangement, and
law enforcement
Designate team leader
Establish team procedures and protocols
Meet on a regular basis and as needed
This team should be able to participate in a positive collaborative process
Establish policy defining prohibited behaviors
Identify other behaviors that would be cause for screening or intervention
Define threshold for intervention
Establish anonymous reporting mechanisms
Provide training/guidance to encourage reporting
Identify community resources through asset mapping
Ensure availability to respond
Establish trust that reports will be acted upon within a timely manner
Most reports can be handled by team
Establish threat assessment procedures
Establish behaviors that should be referred to law enforcement
It is important to remember that just because law enforcement is involved, does not mean a district is absolved from the case.

Establish procedures for gathering information
Organize information around 11 Investigative Questions
Make assessment and decide on intervention
Asset mapping of available resources
Guidance on what types of behaviors/situations should be reported to the Team, and how reports can be made
Access to guidance from legal counsel
Searchable database, spreadsheet, or a list to allow the Team to identify persons/situations that have been previously reported
Training for SSSP team (ongoing)
Training for students, staff, and parents
Training for all on how and when to anonymously report

In November, TEA will email a two-part survey link via Qualtrics survey to all Superintendents.
The survey questions are to determine how to provide services to all children.
