Excerpts from the nominations of this year’s winners: 

Nathan L. (Class of 2028)

Nate is one of the top students in his overall grade level, participates in sports, many clubs, and numerous on-campus events. Additionally, Nathaniel has been chosen a number of times to attend field trips as a representative for our school as a STEM student. Nathaniel is an active learner who never hesitates to ask how he can support others. Nathaniel was asked to be a member of our School Site Council as his voice is always an important one when it comes to making positive changes to our school. Additionally, he knows how to present feedback to stakeholders in a way that is mature and respectful. Aside from being a member of the boy's basketball team, Nate took it upon himself to be an academic mentor to a student who transferred into our school and joined the team. Previously, the student failed all classes at his school. After working with Nate for a semester, the student earned Honor Roll. Nate stays after school frequently and engages with our after-school program, often working with other students to build community. He is really just a light and positive force at the school. He is one of the most impressive students I have ever worked with in my 13 year educational career.

Nate consistently volunteers within the school. He has partnered with administration and school custodians to work on a school clean up campaign, participates in peer-tutoring, and supports other school sports. Nate has a goal to one day be an engineer. One of his passions is getting clean water for everyone in the world; especially those living in underserved communities. As a student, he remembers clearly having to walk to his neighborhood bodega with his mom to get clean water for his family. He was very much inspired by this and has consistently said he wants to work to make this a reality for all.

Nate is a model for other students at our school. He is a truly motivated individual -- not just for his own gain, but to help support others. Nate truly lives and breathes to make things better for his family but also for others around him. I am really impressed with how reflective Nate is and how he thinks about his positionally in the school and in the larger neighborhood.

Astro O. (Class of 2029)

As an active member of the Associated Student Body (ASB), Astro has been instrumental in organizing various school events, including pep rallies, dances, and the much-anticipated Winter Carnival. Their ability to bring the community together and create memorable experiences for their peers is a testament to their leadership and commitment to school spirit. In addition to these efforts, Astro's participation in community events underscores their dedication to civic engagement and community service.  Astro's talents further shine in the realm of performing arts. Their performances in the Drama Club, especially in the improv show 'Made Up Stuff,' are not only hilarious but also demonstrate their creativity and confidence. These qualities make them a standout member of the Drama Club and an inspiration to their peers who admire their artistic abilities.  Academically, Astro sets a high standard as a model student in honors and Advanced Placement courses. Their dedication to academic excellence, combined with their active participation in extracurricular activities, makes them a well-rounded individual and a role model for their peers.  Astro's advocacy work as a strong and vocal member of the Gay Straight Alliance (formerly known as Pride Club) is particularly commendable. Their efforts in promoting inclusivity, understanding, and support for the LGBTQ+ community within the school are vital contributions to social justice.

Samantha M. (Class of 2031)

Samantha is always helping everyone out , keeping up with all the work and having positive interactions with everyone around her.  Samantha is dedicated to do her work and pushes her teammates to accomplish their work. Samantha had done a presentation based on Mass Incarceration and let her peers know why it's impacting our society. She did research, asked questions to open up her thinking and others. Samantha's effort has impacted the Pico-Union community by volunteering her time in community service hours. She went to her old middle school and engaged in positive multigenerational change.

Melanie P. (Class of 2027)

Melanie has devoted so many of her weekends to work with Changeist, a non-profit organization that brings together high school students to learn about racial injustice in the community, advocating for equality, and investigate global and local social justice issues. Through Changeist, Melanie has also participated in donation drives and food pantry events in the Pico-Union area. Melanie has been part of the student government for about two years, where she has advocated for a healthier school. As a member of the student government, Melanie has also played a great role in helping to organize some largescale school-wide events such as prom, Spooktacular, homecoming, and more.

Genesis A. (Class of 2028)

Genesis is actively practicing positive multigenerational change not only for her school community but for Pico Union. She is an active Student Ambassador, she has attended the East LA Mexican Independence parade in East LA to represent the Latinx community at her high school. She actively participates at high school recruitment fairs, she actively helps support the main office when she has the chance (often during her lunch time). She advocates resources offered at her high school and the positive welcoming community of the school. She volunteers at EQ2 once a week & she works on the weekends with her mom selling food as a street vendor, which is a significant part of the workforce in the communities we serve.

Heidi S. (Class of 2029)

Heidi is the a leader and role model inside and outside of the classroom. She is a true example of a servant leader in that she supports those around her and models a calm and supportive approach to problem-solving. She is consistently acknowledged for her kind disposition, willingness to help her peers, and desire to take on new challenges and leadership positions. 

Heidi is a true advocate for herself and peers. She offers ample encouragement to peers in the classroom and during free time. Many students describe Heidi as "their rock" because of the personal and academic support she happily offers to others. She advocates for change when she things don't sit with her. She requested to be in honors when not initially selected, she speaks up when students treat one another with disrespect, and she creates spaces for people to discuss differences and how to work together.

Emerlyn C. (Class of 2030)

Emerlyn is an exceptional role model in our 9th grade team and hold an important role as Freshman Class Secretary. She is a student who leads by example and is incredibly kind to everyone she interacts with in class and around our school community. She has attended our most recent community service events and has joined clubs on campus that promote social justice issues and community service opportunities. In her work with ASB, Emerlyn continues to make an impact in the Pico-Union community. The most recent Pico Union Neighborhood Clean Up gathered over 100 volunteers and in groups spread out to clean and gather tons of trash and beautified our community. Her work in the Holiday Food Drive helped her high school contribute to Alexandria House in Pico Union for a donation of over 1,000+ food items. Her contributions alone don't stop there. She is currently involved in a club to help tutor elementary and middle school students. Her time in the tutoring club has contributed to the impact and community building we continue to bridge between our school system.

Alyzee S. (Class of 2026)

Alyzee’s intellect and intuition help her see the big picture and how it applies to her, to her community and to our planet. She is goal-oriented, compassionate, caring, achieving, and driven to succeed to help others. Alyzee is mature beyond her years, comprehensive in her worldview, and a true seeker of knowledge.  She is here to change the world.

Yasmin R. (Class of 2027)

Yasmin deserves the Commitment to Community award for her academic excellence and for building community.

Julissa V. (Class of 2028)

Julissa is a dedicated and driven student who is rapidly becoming a leader on campus. Julissa was selected to be a part of a tutor group of top students who tutor and work with other students each week. She is one of the most dedicated tutors, and has completed more hours than anyone in the sophomore class. Students have spoken highly of her willingness to help and her ability to break down complex material. She is humble and understanding and genuinely cares about helping her peers.

Felipe S. (Class of 2029)

Felipe is an advocate for positive change in his community. He engages in a variety of topics of social justice. Felipe constantly impacts not only his peers, but his teachers as well with his optimism, selflessness, and compassion.

Oscar P. (Class of 2025)

Oscar co-leads a club called Immigrants on the Rise and during his time at Brio he has organized demonstrations and rallies his classmates around issues and courses that aim to support immigrants in the US. He connects students with service opportunities, models social activism and aims to develop other student leaders at school so that his social causes can continue even after he graduates.

Dayana G. (Class of 2026)

Dayana has been an active volunteer for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) and its affiliates. She has volunteered at events in the community where Mexican families living in Los Angeles have been reunited with the 3rd generation living in Mexico. She has provided logistic support during the events, as well as been instrumental in recruiting other student leaders from our school. 

Danna P. (Class of 2027)

Danna is a lovely force of positivity in and outside the classroom, even with our current remote setting! Not only do I see her engage and participate in class, qualities few student leaders have exhibited especially during this virtual setting, but she also encourages her peers. Whenever she sees one of her classmates participate or offer great insight, Danna the majority of the times will be the first to applaud her classmate which sets off a chain reaction of a positive and encouraging learning environment. 

Luna L. (Class of 2028)

Luna has been very dedicated to her academics, always attending classes and submitting all of her assignments. All of her teachers have positively commented on her participation and performance. Luna has been really helpful in facilitating peer discussions and participation in online classes. She is very responsive to questions and will volunteer to help. This sets a strong precedent for her fellow students and the mastery of her work has been a great student model as well.

Leslie J. (Class of 2025)

Leslie is a stellar student at her high school. She is aware of the community she grew up in and is proud of it. She knows that her community, Pico-Union is currently impacted by gentrification and therefore believes that the people in the community have education as an opportunity to improve their current circumstances. Her interest on mental health awareness is evident as she spends time in the counseling office discussing the importance of emotional intelligence. She supports one of the counselors by updating the school's "Mindset is Everything" wall. This wall displays a variety of messages on mental health, sexual orientation, identity, healthy relationships, coping mechanisms for anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Besides her interest on mental health, Leslie has high grades and wants to attend a four-year university after high school. She knows the impact that a four-year university will have on her, her family, and her community. Leslie is already taking action on causes that are important to all.

Ellmi G. (Class of 2026)

Ellmi is an exceptional leader at University Prep Value High School. Over the last year, Ellmi has challenged herself academically to take on AP and Honors classes at our campus. In the Summer of 2019, Ellmi and a couple of her peers were nominated to attend the Value Schools Leadership Conference, where she was introduced to numerous leaders of our community, including Terrence James Roberts, who she learned about in Freshmen Seminar. She is currently working with Leadership Council to plan and organize events that give back directly to Pico Union. She currently serves as a committee member for our Everest Value School "We Climb" Campaign. Her work on the campaign has allowed her to attend Neighborhood Council Meetings for Rampart and Pico-Union. At these meetings, she has been asked to speak on behalf of our school and its students. She is kind and caring to others. She is passionate, enthusiastic, and eager to give back to her community. Above all, Ellmi is a leader at her high school.

James G. (Class of 2027)

James is very involved in activities in high school. James has proven that he is capable of handling rigor and is always up for an academic challenge. He advocates for himself and for others. He always is present and involved in volunteer opportunities on Saturdays, such as the Beautification Day that we hosted earlier in the year.
