Celebrations, awards, and the latest news on Alumni of Equitas Academy.

Equitas Alumna featured on Telemundo

October 18, 2023 -- Equitas Alumna, Catherine Gonzalez was featured in an interview with Telemundo, Chanel 52.

Last month, while we were prepping for the High School Fair, an Equitas Alumna, Catherine Gonzalez was interviewed with Telemundo regarding her experience at Equitas Academy Charter Schools.

Catherine stated, "My experience was fantastic, I loved being here. There was never a time when I wasn't curious, optimistic, or socially intelligent."

Catherine is a Class of 2026 Alumna who is currently a sophomore attending UC Davis. This year, she is on the rugby team at UC Davis and is also officially a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Catherine has volunteered her time over the years with Equitas in a variety of ways.  This summer, she volunteered her time to teach gardening at our Community Resource Fair on July 21st, 2023, and was the master of ceremonies for Equitas' Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on July 31st, 2023.

At Equitas, we believe in all of our scholars and their ability to grow up and excel in their passions. Catherine Gonzalez is an amazing example of who our Alumni are and how they continue to give back to Equitas and their community.

Below you will find out more about Catherine's experience at Equitas as well as the video for the Telemundo Interview on the left.

Catherine's Alumni Interview

Tell us your current school, current major, and dream occupation.

  • I go to the University of California Davis. I am a genetics major and I want to be a geneticist.

How would you describe your experience at Equitas?

  • My experience at Equitas Academy was undeniably unique and transformative. From a young age, I was instilled with core values like curiosity, social intelligence, and perseverance which have played a vital role in allowing me to become a woman of value. The ability Equitas had with cultivating not only academic knowledge but also essential life skills is truly remarkable. I also created friendships that have been a source of support and inspiration to me. Perhaps what I cherish the most about my experience at Equitas is the change to give back as an alumna. Being able to return to the school and continue to support my community and future alumni has been a deeply fulfilling experience.

What advice would you give to current 8th graders?

  • To current 8th graders, I would advise them to embrace what they excel at and are passionate about. I encourage you to maintain an open mind and never shy away from trying new things. I’ve discovered passions in unexpected places, whether it was joining a sorority, exploring stand-up-comedy, playing on the rugby team, or working in the laboratory. Don’t limit yourself to opportunities. Embrace the opportunities that await you.

What is one of the best memories you had during your time at Equitas?

  • One of my favorite memories I had at Equitas was the math madness initiative that Ms.Johnson had. During math mathness 8th graders were guided in groups to make math games for 5th-7th graders. It was such a fun and interactive way to learn.

What is a current long-term goal you want to accomplish?

  • My long-term goal is to establish and operate my own medical clinic, with a dual mission of advancing the field of medicine, particularly in the search for a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and providing comprehensive care for individuals with disabilities.

In my vision, this clinic will not only focus on treating patients but will also extend its care to encompass the families and support networks surrounding those with disabilities. I am deeply committed to ensuring that all aspects of a patient's well-being are addressed and that no one is left behind. My ultimate objective is to make quality healthcare accessible and affordable to underserved and economically disadvantaged families.

This endeavor aligns with my strong sense of social responsibility, and I aspire to create a positive impact on the community by addressing healthcare disparities.

What is a current short-term goal you want to accomplish?

  • My immediate short-term goal is to successfully complete my university education in the University of California Davis with a clear path to career opportunities upon graduation. I am actively working towards earning a major in genetics and a minor in medical humanities, which I believe will equip me with a well-rounded foundation to make a meaningful impact in the field of healthcare.

To achieve this, I am committed to maintaining a proactive approach in seeking assistance when needed, as I understand that collaboration and mentorship are key to personal and professional growth. Furthermore, my goal is to sustain my curiosity and thirst for knowledge, as it is through continuous learning that I intend to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving field.

What is the most important thing you want people to know about you?

  • I would like to emphasize my resilience and unwavering passion for education, which stems from my deep commitment to my community. As a first-generation student, I am acutely aware of the sacrifices my parents made to support my educational journey, and I consider myself truly fortunate to have the opportunity to pursue higher education.

One of my aspirations is to contribute to the enchantment of my Latino community. I want it to be known that I am dedicated to serving my community, and I am steadfast in my commitment to breaking down educational barriers and challenging stereotypes. I pledge to remain a steadfast advocate for educational equity and work tirelessly to ensure that our community rises above these challenges.

I really want the younger generation to aspire to make change and I want to serve as guidance for doing so.
