Three practices to raising adaptive and resilient children through growth mindset parenting

Have a growth mindset yourself - We all have moments when we have a fixed mindset and when we have a growth mindset. We have days where small setbacks will knock us down and we are tempted to give up when we know we are capable of more. It is important that we acknowledge those moments and help our children recognize those moments, too. When your child is having a fixed mindset moment, help them be aware by helping them name how they feel. Once your child has been calmed, explore the strategies they have tried and whether or not they were effective and discuss other new strategies they could try. It may sound odd, but we need to be more aware of our fixed mindset in order to develop a more persistent growth mindset. In other words, recognizing a fixed mindset is a critical part of shifting toward a growth mindset. It is important that as parents, we remain supportive and consistent over time.

Talent praise versus effort praise - When we praise our children about how smart or talented they are, we can be unconsciously sending them a message that they are talented in some areas, but not in others. This can make them want to focus and demonstrate their talent by doing things they do well and avoiding those that challenge them. We can instead praise our children on the effort and hard work that goes into their learning and success. For example:

Talent Praise Effort Praise

Well done! You’re really smart! Well done, I noticed how much you studied.

Wow, you got an A! What did you find helped you to do so well?

You nailed it - you’re a natural. Great, what did you find the most difficult to learn?

Responding to failure and setbacks - Research shows how we respond as parents when our children experience failure and setbacks is one of the most important factors in how our children develop a fixed mindset response. In downplaying (It’s okay, you can’t be good at everything) or overreacting to a setback (How did you make such a simple mistake? What were you thinking?) sends a message to our children that they don’t have the natural ability to succeed. Research states that a better response would be to focus on the learning and growth that comes from failures and setbacks (What do you think you need to work on to get better?). This response sends the message that mistakes do not define their ability and are not permanent. Throughout life, our children will experience several challenges and setbacks. This is an important part of life because challenges and setbacks are a necessary part of the growth process.

Take Action

As we begin this new year, you can help us review the steps necessary in case an emergency ever happening at your child's school. The following actions steps are defined by the Texas School Safety Center (TXSSC) in conjunction with the governor’s office of homeland security and the commissioner of higher education. Also, all EPISD staff and faculty are provided with a comprehensive plan, and a workable protocol that is easily remembered and applied during an emergency. At EPISD, as recommended by the TXSSC, we use the Standard Response Protocol (SRP). Please see protocol below.

A major harvest festival in numerous states in India. The festival marks the arrival of Spring. This fantastic festival can be witnessed in the city of Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Originally, it was a past time reserved for royalty and the wealthy. In the present, it has evolved into a festival open to the whole world with participants from Japan, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada, China, United States, France, Brazil, etc. People from all over the world participate in the festivities, where the kites linked with the celebration represents the god's spirits waking from their winter slumber. There are a variety of kites, from lightweight colorful paper with bamboo frames which are the traditional to others featuring celebrities or social themes. A "kite fighting" game takes places as part of the festival, kite fliers try to cut another's strings and knock down their kites. The lines of these kites are most of the time coated with mixture of rice and crushed glass. Acrobats perform during the day and at night illuminated kites, known as "tukkals" fill the skies along with fireworks. It is a tradition to offer sweets made of sesame seeds and jaggery to close ones during the festival and a common saying in Marathi language that means "have these Til-Gul sweets and speak sweet words." This inclusive Indian celebration also takes place in Hindu temples in the United States.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

January 17, 2022

The National Constitution Center very well stated, “Today, the King holiday serves multiple purposes: It honors the total legacy of King; focuses on the issue of civil rights; highlights the use of nonviolence to promote change; and calls people into public service.”

Best known for his leadership during the American Civil rights movement of the 1950's and 1960's. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lead from 1955-1968 several efforts to eliminate Jim Crows Laws and other forms of systematic racism that hindered the mobility of people of color in the US. Dr. King was a champion when it came to demonstrations that combined nonviolence with direct action.

Dr. King's most celebrated speech "I Have a Dream" in 1963, envisioned a world with equal justice for all people under the law. As a result, he earned a Nobel Peace Prize. Dr. King's advocacy emphasized the importance of economic justice in the fight for equality and racial liberation. As he was supporting Memphis sanitation workers in their strike for union recognition, better safety standards, and liveable wages, he was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis. Calls for creation of MLK Day/holiday began shortly after his assassination but until 1983 congress passed legislation making Dr. King's birthday a federal holiday. After a battle for MLK Day to be recognized at the state level, in 2000 all the 50 states officially adopted MLK Day.

“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

(Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., speaking before the Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1968.)

Mahayana New Year

January 18, 2022

The term Mahāyāna refers to the various practices and philosophy of Buddhism. Another branch of the religion is Theravada.

Mahāyāna and Theraveda Buddhism range in a few ways. Theraveda Buddhism is practiced in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka. It is known for its emphasis on the language of Pali, the delivery language of Buddha.

Buddhism is more prevalent in Northeast Asia, such as China, Taiwan, and Tibet. As a result, local customs were absorbed by the local communities, which led to the existence of local cultural customs. Mahāyāna Buddhism is practiced in the United States among immigrants from the countries where it is practiced.

In order to achieve Enlightenment, Buddhists believe that it can be done during any individual's lifetime. They also encourage others to achieve it by serving others. On New Year's Day, Buddhists will pay tribute to their god, Buddha. They will also perform rituals and light candles to celebrate the occasion.

For Buddhists, this is a time to reflect on their past mistakes and learn from them. They also believe that by doing so, they can bring good luck. They buy new items, clean and redecorate the home . The celebration involves a feast stuffed with sweets, and typically a show of fireworks at midnight.
