Take a look at the exciting things our Science Academies have been working on this August! From new initiatives to hands-on learning experiences, our teachers and students are diving into STEM with energy and creativity.
Our young scientists and engineers have officially kicked off their work in the science labs! Students are diving into the engineering design process, building and creating with LEGOs, exploring science tools, and discovering what it really means to be a scientist or engineer. With so much hands-on learning and creativity, the labs are buzzing with curiosity and excitement! 🤩
This month in science, our students became young engineers as they designed and built their very own catapults! Through hands-on exploration, they discovered how different parts come together to make a working system. Students also put their observation skills to the test by identifying the physical properties of each catapult part. From testing launches to making adjustments, our scientists had a blast learning how science and engineering work hand in hand! 🧪
Our young scientists took on a creative Maker’s Space Challenge this month: design and build an umbrella for a baby mouse! 🐭 Using imagination, problem-solving, and teamwork, students experimented with different materials to protect their tiny friend from the “rain.” From testing to redesigning, our makers learned that even the smallest problems can inspire BIG ideas!
This month, we celebrate Cooley’s amazing STEM Lab paraprofessionals, Ms. Madrid and Ms. Frausto! Their dedication and creativity shine as they transform Lego Labs into welcoming, exciting spaces where students can’t wait to learn. From decorating labs to organizing beginning-of-year materials, their teamwork and positivity have helped launch our year off strong. Cooley is so lucky to have such joyful and hardworking paraprofessionals on our team! 🏫
Ms. Madrid is on the left, and Ms. Frausto is on the right.
Ms. Madrid has served EPISD as a Pre-K paraprofessional for four years and is excited to step into her new role in STEM. She loves the curiosity students bring to learning and looks forward to fostering innovation, problem-solving, and collaboration across all grade levels.
Ms. Frausto has been with EPISD for 12 years, working in both AIM and Pre-K3. She is thrilled to begin this new STEM adventure at Cooley, supporting students, teachers, and the campus in making learning fun, engaging, and successful.
What's Coming Next for our Academies!
We are excited to share that each of our academies has a cohort of nine dedicated teachers working toward their National STEM Certification this school year! We are incredibly proud of these educators for committing to this year-long journey. As they deepen their expertise in STEM, they will bring new strategies, skills, and innovations into the classroom—helping to elevate student learning and inspire future scientists, engineers, and creators.
Upcoming: Participating teachers will have an initial meeting with their NISE Coach on September 3 OR 4 at 4:00 PM on zoom. Be on the lookout for an initial email from NISE.
LEGO® Education: The program is founded on a competency-based framework that is rooted in four core competency categories: Pedagogy, STEAM Concepts, 21st Century Skills and Classroom Management. These critical competencies enable teachers to facilitate, and fully realize the learning promises in every LEGO® Education solution to drive student learning outcomes.
