Pragmatic Language

  • What is pragmatic language? Pragmatics is how we use language to successfully navigate and participate in our academic and social environments. This can include everything from knowing how to appropriately start conversations with peers to picking up on social cues in a job interview. An individual can possess all the knowledge in the world about language, such as vocabulary definitions and grammar rules, but if he or she doesn't know how to accurately use this knowledge in different contexts, then this knowledge is almost entirely useless. What matters most is that our students are able to use their language knowledge in an efficient and effective manner to be truly successful communicators in all settings.
