Submission

We invite video submissions in the three following categories: Bioinformatics Pedagogy (20 min), Topic Videos (10 min), and Lightning Topic Videos (3 min). Accepted video submissions will be published to the RECOMB-BE YouTube channel

Submission video files must have either 1920x1080 or 3840x2160 resolution, and submissions must be appropriately edited final products that are ready for dissemination. We recommend submitting MP4 or MKV files with H.264 or MPEG-4 video codec.

Descriptions of each of the three categories are provided below, and you can submit a video via the following Google Form (deadline: April 15, 2022):

Topic Videos (10 min)

Topic Videos are individual lesson videos designed to teach a single specific topic or concept. We welcome submissions about any topics or concepts that may reasonably be included in a bioinformatics or computational biology course. Our primary interests are in Topic Videos geared towards undergraduate or graduate courses, but we welcome Topic Videos targeting K-12 instruction as well.

Topic Videos should aim to be around 10 minutes, though we will accept submissions that are up to 20 minutes.

Topic Videos should ideally be self-contained, but if a presenter feels as though a longer (at most 50 min) supplementary video, example assessments, etc. are beneficial to the Topic Video, details can be provided in the submission form.

For examples of Topic Videos, please see the videos on the Bioinformatics Algorithms: An Active Learning Approach YouTube channel.

Lightning Topic Videos (3 min)

Lightning Topic Videos are Topic Videos that are concise: they are intended to be a brief introduction or summary of a given topic or concept. They are intended to be fairly high-level and should not require significant prerequisite knowledge to understand.

Lightning Topic Videos must be at most 3 minutes.

Bioinformatics Pedagogy (20 min)

Bioinformatics Pedagogy presentations are solicited in all areas of bioinformatics training, education, and learning. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Bioinformatics and computing education research

  • Bioinformatics and computational biology curricula

  • Pedagogical strategies and techniques

  • Online bioinformatics education

  • Lessons learned from teaching bioinformatics courses to computer science and life science students

  • Perspectives on bioinformatics education from academia, industry, and others

Bioinformatics Pedagogy presentations should aim to be around 20 minutes, though shorter submissions are welcome, and we will accept submissions that are up to 30 minutes.

Licensing

Authors of accepted submissions will be able to choose from one of two license agreements (form will be sent to authors upon acceptance):

  1. The primary license agreement grants RECOMB-BE the right to publish the video to the RECOMB-BE YouTube channel with fully public visibility (strongly preferred).

  2. In the event that authors do not wish to have their accepted submissions be publicly visible, the alternate license agreement grants RECOMB-BE the right to publish the video to the RECOMB-BE YouTube Channel in an unlisted manner, and authors will be sent the direct URL to the video.

In either case, authors will maintain complete ownership of their submissions.
