RECOMB-BE 2022

6th RECOMB Satellite Conference on Bioinformatics Education

Virtually "in" La Jolla, CA, USA, May 21, 2022

Overview and Goals

The 6th RECOMB Satellite Conference on Bioinformatics Education (RECOMB-BE) will be held virtually "in" La Jolla, California, USA on May 21, 2022. The event will be fully online, but we encourage RECOMB attendees who will be in La Jolla to meet with each other in person if they wish. RECOMB-BE 2022 will focus on bioinformatics education for undergraduate and graduate students, with a special emphasis on innovations in online learning, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference will be held in a fully-online synchronous + asynchronous hybrid format: pre-recorded presentations selected from submissions will be made available on the RECOMB-BE YouTube channel before and after the conference, and the synchronous virtual meeting on May 21 will consist of discussion panels and Birds of a Feather sessions. We hope that videos posted on the RECOMB-BE YouTube channel will be used in many bioinformatics classes so that students can "meet" bioinformatics professors from universities all around the world.

RECOMB-BE will immediately precede the 26th International Conference on Research in Computational Molecular Biology (RECOMB), which will be in La Jolla, May 22-25, 2022. Rapid advances in the life sciences and in related information technologies necessitate the ongoing refinement of bioinformatics education, training, and learning strategies in order to maintain their relevance and to enhance their effectiveness. In response to this need, RECOMB-BE 2022 will address best practices in teaching bioinformatics and computational biology.

Key Dates

  • Submission Deadline: April 1, 2022 April 15, 2022

  • Acceptance Notification: April 9, 2022 April 23, 2022

  • RECOMB-BE: May 21, 2022

Submissions

We invite video submissions in the three following categories: Topic Videos (10 min), and Lightning Topic Videos (3 min), and Bioinformatics Pedagogy (20 min). Please see the Submission page for details.

While we encourage RECOMB-BE 2022 participants to also participate in RECOMB 2022, this is not a requirement: folks who are interested in participating in RECOMB-BE 2022 are welcome to do so, even if they are unable to participate in RECOMB 2022.

About RECOMB

The RECOMB International Conference on Research in Computational Molecular Biology was founded in 1997 to provide a scientific forum for theoretical advances in computational biology and their applications in molecular biology and medicine. The conference arose from the need to advance research on the mathematical and computational side of molecular biology. The 26th Annual RECOMB conference (RECOMB 2022) will be held May 22-25, 2022 in La Jolla, California, USA.

The RECOMB Satellite Series was founded by Pavel Pevzner in 2001. Today, it consists of eight focused meetings covering various specialized aspects of bioinformatics: RECOMB Comparative Genomics, RECOMB/ISCB Regulatory Genomics, RECOMB Computational Cancer Biology, RECOMB Computational Proteomics, RECOMB Systems Biology, RECOMB Massively Parallel Sequencing, RECOMB Algorithmic Biology, and, of course, RECOMB Bioinformatics Education. The RECOMB Bioinformatics Education Satellite Series was founded by Pavel Pevzner and Ron Shamir in 2009. Previous meetings took place in San Diego (2009 and 2010), Vienna (2011), St. Petersburg (2012), and Pittsburgh (2014), and a RECOMB-BE-organized meeting on Big Data, MOOCs, and Quantitative Education for Biologists took place in Bethesda (2015).
