Abstract:
Technology has changed the world of education by opening new concepts to learning that no one could have ever expected. While technology offers many tools and can have a positive effect on learning, the purpose of this study was to explore the negative effects that using technology can have on the world of education. Using a case study type of qualitative research, the researcher surveyed nine 6th graders and then proceeded to interview two of those students more in depth. The researcher also interviewed their English teacher whom she worked with closely during her senior semester long internship in the fall of 2020. While working closely with the students the researcher noticed levels of frustration and confusion. There are many positive aspects of combining technology with education and these can be very obvious, but the negative aspects need to be considered as well. The researcher wanted to take into account both the students' and the teacher's perspective on the challenges that technology brings to learning because it has been very challenging on both ends especially since the outbreak of COVID-19.
"Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important."
~Bill Gates
